MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM?(Marketwire -02/19/12)- Swinton , the UK?s leading high street retailer of house insurance is warning homeowners who live in flood prone areas that they may be left with an uninsurable property when an agreement between the insurance industry and The Government that guarantees cover comes to an end.

Under the terms of the agreement, insurers promise to cover high-risk homes as long as The Government administers investment into flood defences.

The current agreement is due to end in 2013; however, many homeowners living in the most high risk areas have been given some relief ? the Government has announced that construction is to begin on 60 flood and costal defence schemes next year.

This means that over 145,000 homes in high risk flood areas will be better protected and reduce the risk of high payouts that insurance companies would have to make in the event of a flood.

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said, ?It is essential that all those involved in the agreement reach a solution sooner rather than later. Up to 200,000 of homes could be left without any home insurance cover if a new deal isn?t struck between insurers and The Government.?

Motion FX (for Mac)

Photo Booth devotees who've longed for more dynamic video effects will find a lot to like in Autodesk's Motion FX. The free Mac app leverages an Apple computer's iSight camera to add fire, smoke, and numerous other visual effects to photos and video taken within the app. You can't import previous taken photos and video, and there are some minor issues with the Motion FXs ability to track and read items in its environment, but it?s a worthy download for those who like to tinker with goofy imagery.?

Getting Started
You'll see an image of yourself in the large viewing area when you launch Motion FX, but not a normal image. Instead, the app applies all manner of wacky effects as it cycles through green auras, blue flames, and the like. To start, you have to wave a hand so that the motion trackers pick up your movement (which it does rather quickly). Bringing the mouse to the bottom of the viewing area causes a toolbar to appear which contains over a dozen visual effects ranging from smoke to rainbow effects. You can switch between them on the fly simply by selecting a new effect. Above the viewing area is a strip that lets you tinker with several options that enhance the Motion FX experience: Face Detect, Mode, Effect Paint, Video Warp, and Reveal.

The Motion FX Experience
"Face Detect" lets you apply one of several effects to your eyes. The camera picks up on your orbs and applies an effect such as blue flame. I liked that Motion FX picked them up quickly, but it sometimes has problems maintaining the effect when I turned my head to a three-quarters angle.

"Mode" lets you select a color and have an effect apply only to the area in which the color appears. For example, when I clicked a red box in the background, flame effects appeared over every instance red in the camera's view. Motion FX was pretty accurate in nailing all the reds in its vision, but it also set ablaze light pink items, such as blouses or human tongues. It could use some refining.

"Effect Paints" lets you drawn lines or shapes that eventually dissipate into the effect you've selected; it creates a misty, almost ethereal look. "Video Warp" lets you warp the image by stretching and bending it to comical levels.

If you'd like to preserve your creations, you can snap still snapshots or record video by clicking the appropriate menu bar icon. There are five speeds for cycling through images, and the Reveal button opens the folder that contains either photos or video.

Should You Download Motion FX?
If you're in the mood for a few laughs, grab a friend, fire up Motion FX, and deep dive into the insanity. Creating goofy photos and video is incredibly fun when you can pretend that you're crying rainbows. Motion FX may not allow you to layer effects, or apply them to previously taken imagery, but it's a fun app that won't weigh on the wallet.

Egyptian lawmakers intervene to allow expelled Christians to return home

A parliamentary delegation met with locals yesterday in the village of Sharbat, where sectarian strife had led to the expulsion of eight Christian families.

Five of eight Christian families who were expelled from their village after sectarian strife in Egypt?s delta can now return, announced a parliamentary delegation that visited Sharbat yesterday to investigate.

That some of the families may return is a positive development, but the continued reliance on informal mediation instead of the rule of law to end the crisis is worrying, says Ishak Ibrahim, a researcher for the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights. The original decision to expel the families was also made by an ad hoc council, a traditional system of local justice that often leaves victims of sectarian conflict little recourse.

?I think we need to apply the law. It?s a shame that members of the People?s Assembly use this illegal method? to address the results of the initial mediation, he says. ?They didn?t uphold the law and the state.?

On Jan. 27, following rumors of an affair between a Muslim man and Christian woman in Sharbat, villagers attacked and burned several Christian homes and shops. One Christian man fired a gun into the air during the confrontation, which Muslim residents said incited violence. Village leaders, at a series of unofficial reconciliation meetings overseen by police and governorate officials and some attended by members of parliament, decided that eight Christian families would leave the village.

All of the families were related to either the man who supposedly had the affair or the man who shot a gun. Those related to the shooter were the ones given permission to return.

The parliament members who visited yesterday represented a range of parties, both secular and Islamist. Members from Islamist parties were present at the initial ?reconciliation councils.?

They announced that the families of those related to the man who shot the gun during the attack could return, and asserted that they were never forced to leave in the first place but chose to leave for their safety.?The patriarch of the four families who may now return, Abu Suleiman, said this week that the committee told him he could leave the village or face continued attacks.

The statement by parliament members did not mention the remaining three families, and blamed media for exaggerating and worsening the situation. It also urged police to investigate the attacks on Christian homes and shops.

Mohammed el-Sioufi, an accountant and vice president of the Islamic Culture Center, a mosque in Newark, is interviewed by the Associated Press about the New York Police Department's surveillance of the Muslim community in Newark, N.J., Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012. Americans in New Jersey?s largest city were subjected to surveillance as part of the New York Police Department?s effort to build databases of where Muslims work, shop and pray. (AP) ? Americans living and working in New Jersey's largest city were subjected to surveillance as part of the New York Police Department's effort to build databases of where Muslims work, shop and pray. The operation in Newark was so secretive even the city's mayor says he was kept in the dark.

For months in mid-2007, plainclothes officers from the NYPD's Demographics Units fanned out across Newark, taking pictures and eavesdropping on conversations inside businesses owned or frequented by Muslims.

The result was a 60-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, containing brief summaries of businesses and their clientele. Police also photographed and mapped 16 mosques, listing them as "Islamic Religious Institutions."

The report cited no evidence of terrorism or criminal behavior. It was a guide to Newark's Muslims.

According to the report, the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Newark Police Department, which at the time was run by a former high-ranking NYPD official. But Newark's mayor, Cory Booker, said he never authorized the spying and was never told about it.

"Wow," he said as the AP laid out the details of the report. "This raises a number of concerns. It's just very, very sobering."

Police conducted similar operations outside their jurisdiction in New York's Suffolk and Nassau counties on suburban Long Island, according to police records.

Such surveillance has become commonplace in New York City in the decade since the 2001 terrorist attacks. Police have built databases showing where Muslims live, where they buy groceries, even what Internet cafes they use and where they watch sports. Dozens of mosques and student groups have been infiltrated and police have built detailed profiles of ethnic communities, from Moroccans to Egyptians to Albanians.

The documents obtained by the AP show, for the first time in any detail, how those efforts stretched outside the NYPD's jurisdiction. New Jersey and Long Island residents had no reason to suspect the NYPD was watching them. And since the NYPD isn't accountable to their votes or tax dollars, those non-New Yorkers had little recourse to stop it.

"All of these are innocent people," Nagiba el-Sioufi of Newark said while her husband, Mohammed, flipped through the NYPD report, looking at photos of mosques and storefronts frequented by their friends.

Egyptian immigrants and American citizens, the couple raised two daughters in the United States. Mohammed works as an accountant and is vice president of the Islamic Culture Center, a mosque a few blocks from Newark City Hall.

"If you have an accusation on us, then spend the money on doing this to us," Nagiba said. "But you have no accusation."

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne did not return a message seeking comment about the report. Former Newark Police Chief Garry McCarthy, who is now in charge of the Chicago Police Department, also did not return messages left on his cellphone and with a press aide.

The goal of the report, like others the Demographics Unit compiled, was to give police at-their-fingertips access to information about Muslim neighborhoods. If police got a tip about an Egyptian terrorist in the area, for instance, they wanted to immediately know where he was likely to find a cheap room to rent, where he might buy his lunch and at what mosque he probably would attend Friday prayers.

"These locations provide the maximum ability to assess the general opinions and general activity of these communities," the Newark report said.

The effect of the program was that hundreds of American citizens were cataloged ? sometimes by name, sometimes simply by their businesses and their ethnicity ? in secret police files that spanned hundreds of pages:

? "A Black Muslim male named Mussa was working in the rear of store," an NYPD detective wrote after a clandestine visit to a dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., on Long Island.

? "The manager of this restaurant is an Indian Muslim male named Vicky Amin" was the report back from an Indian restaurant in Lindenhurst, N.Y., also on Long Island.

? "Owned and operated by an African Muslim (possibly Sudanese) male named Abdullah Ddita" was the summary from another dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., just off the highway on the way to the Hamptons, the wealthy Long Island getaway.

In one report, an officer describes how he put people at ease by speaking in Punjabi and Urdu, languages commonly spoken in Pakistan.

Last summer, when the AP first began reporting about the NYPD's surveillance efforts, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his police do not consider religion in their policing.

On Tuesday, following an AP story that showed the NYPD monitored Muslim student groups around the Northeast, school leaders including Yale president Richard Levin expressed outrage over the tactics. Bloomberg fired back in what was the most vigorous defense yet of his department.

"The police department goes where there are allegations. And they look to see whether those allegations are true," he told reporters. "That's what you'd expect them to do. That's what you'd want them to do. Remind yourself when you turn out the light tonight."

There are no allegations of terrorism in the Demographics Unit reports and the documents make clear that police were only interested in locations frequented by Muslims. The canvas of businesses in Newark mentions Islam and Muslims 27 times. In one section of the report, police wrote that the largest immigrant groups in Newark were from Portugal and Brazil. But they did not photograph businesses or churches for those groups.

"No Muslim component within these communities was identified," police wrote, except for one business owned by a Brazilian Muslim of Palestinian descent.

Polls show that most New Yorkers strongly support the NYPD's counterterrorism efforts and don't believe police unfairly target Muslims. The Muslim community, however, has called for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's resignation over the spying and the department's screening of a video that portrays Muslims as wanting to dominate the United States.

In Newark, the report was met with a mixture of bemusement and anger.

"Come, look at yourself on film," Abdul Kareem Abdullah called to his wife as he flipped through the NYPD files at the lunch counter of their restaurant, Hamidah's Cafe.

An American-born citizen who converted to Islam decades ago, Abdullah said he understands why, after the 9/11 terror attacks, people are afraid of Muslims. But he said he wishes the police would stop by, say hello, meet him and his customers and get to know them. The documents show police have no interest in that, he said.

"They just want to keep tabs on us," he said. "If they really wanted to understand, they'd come talk to us."

After the AP approached Booker, he said the mayor's office had launched an investigation.

"We're going to get to the bottom of this," he said.

Booker met with Islamic leaders while campaigning for mayor. Those interviewed by the AP said they wanted to believe he didn't authorize the spying but wanted to hear from him directly.

"I have to look in his eyes," Mohammed el-Sioufi said at his mosque. "I know him. I met him. He was here."

Ironically, because officers conducted the operation covertly, the reports contains mistakes that could have been easily corrected had the officers talked to store owners or imams. If police ever had to rely on the database during an unfolding terrorism emergency as they had planned, those errors would have hindered their efforts.

For instance, locals said several businesses identified as belonging to African-American Muslims actually were owned by Afghans or Pakistanis. El-Sioufi's mosque is listed as an African-American mosque, but he said the imam is from Egypt and the congregation is a roughly even mix of black converts and people of foreign ancestries.

"We're not trying to hide anything. We are out in the open," said Abdul A. Muhammad, the imam of the Masjid Ali Muslim mosque in Newark. "You want to come in? We have an open door policy."

By choosing instead to conduct such widespread surveillance, Mohammed el-Sioufi said, police send the message that the whole community is suspect.

"When you spy on someone, you are kind of accusing them. You are not accepting them for choosing Islam," Nagiba el-Sioufi said. "This doesn't say, 'This guy did something wrong.' This says, 'Everyone here is a Muslim.'"

"It makes you feel uncomfortable, like this is not your country," she added. "This is our country."

Best Debt Management Tips | Find the Best Savings Account ...

You can get all the financial options you need with the best debt management. By making regular payments and having a low debt to income ratio, you can access credit when you choose. If this doesn?t sound like you at this point, then one of the sundry debt management companies might provide you something of assistance. It would be your ultimate responsibility to choose a plan that is bespoke for your financial situation.

Become Debt Free

The best way to maintain and improve your credit score is to pay off debts. Regular monthly payments make good habits and high credit scores. When making payments, make sure you pay off high interest credit cards and unsecured loans before other debts. As for mortgages and student loans, they can go last on the list of payments.

Debt consolidation loans, through home equity or personal loans, can help make payments easier by reducing interest rates and lowering monthly payments. You can use the introductory rate of several credit cards (0%) for balance transfers as well.

Ask for Assistance

It might be time for you to call out the cavalry and ask for some extra assistance if paying on time is just to challenging. Credit counseling can help you come up with a plan to save and budget your money. They can also educate you on financial services that could help, such as a debt management company.

Debt management companies create one payment from all of your unsecured debts amalgamated together. In addition, they assist by bartering for lower interest rates with financial institutions. This option allows you to get out of debt potentially in less than five years, but may temporarily damage your credit score.

Debt negotiation might be something worth considering. You would need to pay a nominal fee for the negotiation firm to persuade your creditors to reduce your monthly loan payments. Not all creditors will agree to this, but many will. Reducing your debt this way gives you more control when it comes to paying off loans, but this will still remain seven years on your credit report. You may have to wait about two to three years before you are able to qualify again for credit.

Choose What?s Best For You

Everybody has their own idea of debt management and how it should work. Again, we must emphasize the importance of having a bespoke plan for your own financial dilemma. Thoroughly review your financial status and any potential issues before settling on the right debt management plan. Don?t be afraid to ask for help. Feel free as well to have debt consolidation companies or other lenders provide free information on their different consumer services.

If you are looking to purchase a TV set for your son's birthday you might want to go towards one engineered for gaming. And, if you are going to be playing video games on your TV you want one with 120 Hz which is the refresh rate on the screen; with 120 Hz you can play games comfortably and with no ghosting Because most video games move extremely fast, some screens with lower Hz really can't handle it, so remember that! Remember to check the dimensions of the TV and to measure the spot you are going to be placing it in. It is equally advisable to take precaution by determining the room of the house where the set will be fixed. The dimensions of the room and the television location spot can influence your choice of TV and it is better to check everything rather than returning the television because it does not fit, can lead to many other uncomfortable situations.

Another thing to consider is if you are going in the LCD and LED direction or Plasma road. Now there are a couple of advantages to both types of television technologies. It really depends on what you prefer. If you prefer TV sets that highlight the darker area of images, Plasma TV will be your choice. Plasma TVs also allow you to see the image clearly at difficult angles, if you are doing the dishes for example. Moreover, if you are one the consumers that like to save on power and thereby reduce expenses, LCD or LED televisions will be good for you; they have been designed to help save energy and they are budget friendly when it comes to using them. I personally think that LED TVs are of the highest quality particularly those from the brand names such as Samsung and LG and this opinion can be corroborated by the different studies that gave the same conclusion.

Remember when purchasing a TV you want to do your research online first and go to the store with a general idea of what you are looking for. Ask for some help from a technology expert as well, and just check out the TVs you are interested in in personal. Another reflex that will pay you is to revert back to the web and compare prices of your chosen HDTV as you stand the chance of making some savings.

If you are looking into purchasing a quality LED-LCD (awesome technology) TV then the best place to start would be the LG 55LW5600 HDTV. I am personally awed at the ingenuity displayed in that TV; follow the link and read the review of that product. Another awesome component to add to your entertainment cent would be the Logitech Revue; this little gadget allows you to link your computer and TV and do all kinds of cool stuff.

Grief And Loss ? Exploring Death After Bereavement | Self ...

Loss forces us to look upon the massive question of what occurs after death. In our modern society, with loss of life carefully hidden from us and the quest of everlasting youth predominant, we are badly equipped to cope with it when it happens.

All of us have had the experience of shedding a loved one and of people turning away from us, scared to acknowledge our loss. People we thought had been our pals disappeared within the waves of grief and we had been left alone with scant few to help us climate the storm. Those that remained with us struggled to help us, as confused as us by our personal experience. They didn?t have the answers any greater than us as to what happens after death.

Yet there are folks out there that may help us perceive the larger question. Increasingly more accounts of close to-loss of life experiences are being heard. After-loss of life communication, once considered a hallucination of grief, is now beginning to be accepted as a real, legitimate experience. Research into reincarnation, past-life recall and the increasing popularity of mediums all level to a means wherein we are able to understand what might be our largest fear. It is slowly turning into increasingly more acceptable to speak about demise and what happens afterwards. To question it in a way we never did before. We?re screaming out for our experiences to be heard and dying to understand the true nature of them.

Yet there is no such thing as a one truth about death. It?s a multi-faceted thing. Whether one person?bookbyte coupon can in all honesty really perceive loss of life from solely their own expertise is doubtful. We need other people. Death is universal, shared by all and by sharing our experiences we are able to begin to understand not only what dying really means but also how our current society has created a false understanding of it, constraining the very nature of it, twisting it and distorting it into something unreal.

Earlier than, we had solely religion to information us an attempt to grasp death. But this has left us woefully unhappy with a bitter taste in our mouths. We?ve unanswered questions that demand to be acknowledged, that can?t be glad with unknown answers. Now, with the opening up of spirituality, we are extra geared up than ever before to discover the question of Death.

But, it takes courage. It requires us to just accept our own mortality, to question our own lives and ultimately our personal death. But we have already got the close expertise of loss of life standing on our doorstep. So the question remains. Do you invite in it, offer it hospitality and get to realize it as you?d an expensive buddy? Or do you slam the door in its face, deny its existence and thus deny your individual?

You could also favor a web based service, as opposed to software that you download. The advantage to this is that you can have access to the program anywhere you are and you aren?t dependent on your computer. Online services can additionally provide you with immediate information. Pharmacy On-a-chip Dispenses Drugs Automatically

An anonymous reader writes "The idea is simple ? load up a microchip with a whole pharmacy of drugs that are dispensed as needed automatically. The devil has been in the details, since mistakes could kill the patient if, say, a leak developed dumping dangerous cocktails into the bloodstream. This MIT sponsored company, however, claims to have perfected wireless control of a pharmacy-on-a-chip and has just completed the clinical trials to prove it. The test microchip has just 20 doses of a single drug, but their new prototype will house thousands of pin-prick sized drug reservoirs, after which they will seek FDA approval. The elderly (who have complicated drug regime) and soldiers could both benefit from these smart pharmacies-on-a-chip, since drugs can be dispensed even if the patient is unconscious."

(AP) ? Mardi Gras. It brings to mind beads, parties and fancy floats in New Orleans as people cram in all the fun they can before the austere religious period known as Lent begins.

In reality, Mardi Gras has long been celebrated in U.S. coastal towns from Texas to Florida. And it means big business.

"It is more of a regional thing, Mardi Gras is," said Stephen Toomey, whose family started a chain of Alabama-based Mardi Gras party supply stores.

"It means a way of life for people who live in these communities, but the bottom line is that it creates a lot of jobs."

Tourism leaders estimate more than 1 million visitors pour into the Mobile, Alabama, area each Mardi Gras season to watch the festivities. The city claims to be the place where the Fat Tuesday celebration originated in the U.S. in the early 1700s.

New Orleans and Mobile have long disputed where the tradition that dates to their French founders really began.

The celebration can stretch weeks and includes dozens of parades, balls and other events.

A 2004 study commissioned by the city of Mobile estimated Mardi Gras had a $225 million economic impact for the area, and tourism leaders say that has grown as the festivities become more popular.

"I would say tens of thousands of dollars are spent on the different beads and throws and things that are thrown off the floats. It really benefits every kind of retailer and the tourism industry," said David Randel, president of the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"From a convention and visitors bureau standpoint, you hope people come for Mardi Gras, fall in love with the area and come back to visit again when the weather is better."

In smaller towns like Fairhope, population 17,000, Mardi Gras is a big help.

Heavenly Creations Bakery sold 1,500 traditional Mardi Gras king cakes in 2011. The colorful cakes go for up to $19.99 each.

Rosie Miller has sold Mardi Gras ball gowns to the women of the Gulf Coast for 30 years. She has thousands of them, most for under $300.

The store has vanloads of women from small towns all over the region who come to shop. Some buy five or six gowns for the various balls they attend during the season.

"Mardi Gras has grown and grown and brings millions of dollars into our economy," Miller said.

Small towns all over the Gulf Coast have parades, balls and other festivities during Carnival Season. In Florida, Pensacola Beach's 2012 Mardi Gras' Schedule includes 16 events from Jan. 7 to Feb. 21.

"Oh yeah, Mardi is a ball, absolutely, it's fun," said Jill Jones, who dressed her dog up in a headband, jester collar and cape and wore a matching costume during the beach's pet parade this month.

Importance of RSS

Published by witter | February 16, 2012 | | 4

If you have been online for quite some time and have been to blog websites, you probably have seen or heard something called ?RSS.? If you are like me when I first began blogging online, I had no idea what an ?RSS? was or how useful it was. I am going to explain those questions and how you can apply it.

Let?s begin by defining what an RSS is. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. I have been using RSS for about half a year now. I discovered the use for RSS while using Firefox, a browser alternative to Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

The reason I use Firefox is because it makes using RSS very simple. They have made it so that everytime you visit a webpage that uses RSS, it shows you a small orange symbol in the address bar. When you notice the symbol, you can click on it which will give you the option to add a bookmark. Bookmarking allows for you to directly link to the RSS file or an XML file, which are a condensed version of the website that you just bookmarked. These RSS file are also commonly known as ?feeds.?

Firefox makes it so that you can read these RSS files without any 3rd party software or application. The feed will show a folder with bunch of links that are the articles from the RSS feed extracted from the website you bookmarked or subscribed to.

To use more advanced technique, you can install a ?RSS reader? to get more feed reading features. Firefox has an RSS reader extension called Sage, which you can download from their home page.

You can use other RSS reader from Google online, but I rather use browser interface RSS reader. It?s just preference and you can experiment with both and see which one you prefer.

If you do not want to use Firefox or if you are just use to other browsers, you can still subscribe to an RSS or XML feed by locating the small orange button anywhere on the site. These small orange icons usually stand for the RSS feed for that site.

There are RSS feeds used for Podcasts and Videocasts also. These are similar to internet radio or TV program that you can subscribe to and listen on a portable media playing devices. When you subscribe to one of these through iTunes, it will automatically update and? download the file and load it on your playlist. You can go to Podfeeder.com and use these feeds to load on other audio programs besides iTunes.

Dr. Jane Aronson: An Adoption Plan With a Happy Ending

As an adoption medicine specialist for more than 20 years, I have read and agonized over the social histories of thousands of children adopted domestically and internationally. These stories are fragments and secrets of a rich fabric of dysfunctional family life from all corners of the world in 196 countries, whether rich or poor, large or small. Most of the time, I have only been given a sliver of what is likely a complex and worthy life of a very young birth mother who may not have ever menstruated or a woman raped and beaten, birthing a precious life all the same.

I am always wondering and yearning to learn more. Sometimes I get the whole story and this is what I want to share today: a very complete story which starts with a very young mother and ends with the adoption of an infant who knew all the players and who will be, in so many ways, defined by the constellation of loving characters in this dramatic narrative.

Even though the vast majority of orphans are relinquished and not abandoned, we have little information about the roots of a child's life. The birth family is ashamed of the pregnancy and makes the decision to relinquish or abandon. There is no invitation from the community to be open and safe and secure. For those poor women who hide their pregnancy and birth, there is danger and desperation. Choosing not to parent one's own child is something that can stalk a mother for the rest of her life. Loss and emptiness from this start of life are rarely managed with gentleness and outreach. Social workers and counselors are not part of this dark moment in the majority of births in extremely poor countries. The birth mother, the new baby and the parents who adopt grieve when there are secrets. There is rarely permission given for contemplation, resolution and healing.

Recently, I received exciting news from a family adopting from Taiwan who I have been working with for about a year. The papers were complete and the child was cleared for adoption. The family had been in Taiwan for three weeks and now they were ready to come home. The baby was referred to the family living in New York about six months ago. This sweet little girl was born to a teenage mother who was 14 during the pregnancy and was 15-year-old at the time of the birth.

The child was placed in an orphanage at birth after the grandparents and unmarried adolescent parent examined the challenges and made the decision not to parent this child, but rather to "make an adoption plan." The child has since been in two foster placements and by the end of the week, she will be living in a permanent home in a transracial family with an older male sibling. During the six months of this child's life, the birth family has been very invested in the child's safety and security; they have visited the child and the child clearly knows this family's faces, their voices, their smell, their style of communication, and their sadness and commitment to her well-being.

The adoptive family has spent the last three weeks living in a foreign city learning about their new little girl. She will be named with her Taiwanese name in addition to an American name that reflects family tradition. They have visited with her in their hotel and have played with her and fed her and have had her overnight. Her six-year-old brother adores her and has become a key focus of the baby's life. This brother is playful and somehow intuitively knows how to charm his baby sister who is a bit reserved and anxious about all the newness around her. New adults of another race are especially suspect after a birth family, orphanage, and two foster care placements. A playful brother who has no expectations is a welcome moment for the baby.

The adoptive family has met the foster family and is very assured that their daughter has been cherished. The foster family is an urban family with two parents in their early 40s and their two daughters who attend local schools. This family has had other foster kids over the past 15 years and they are well-trained in the adoption/foster care network of their city.

And the adoptive family has spent time with the birth family. They have had their unofficial "giving and receiving" ceremony. The youngest daughter and aunt, is 12 and the birth mother is now 15. The visit was quiet and thoughtful; the birth mother has held her baby and she has said her goodbyes. There have been photos taken of the grandparents with their daughters and their grandbaby. It was all open and shared and still mysterious because of the language barrier and cultural puzzles.

And I have seen the photos and they tell a story that is inexplicable and important. When I get up in the morning, I look at the photos and agonize over their meaning. They tell the story of what could be if we could change attitudes about unplanned pregnancies and invest in social work and communities... if we could stop laying blame and keep our eyes on the prize which is about permanency.

This little girl can look at the photos and ask questions someday. There will be memories that can be shared with her and there can be satisfaction in knowing that everyone was able to have some closure to a very challenging and impossible moment in life. There was a process and there was support for the families involved. The baby can grow up and even consider going back to learn more about her roots... and meet her foster mother and her birth family.

And the 15-year-old birth mother, who is a good student, will finish high school and has plans to go to college. She is resolved and on her way to healing from a deep loss.

The baby girl is home in New York, eating well, recovered from jet lag, and adapting to her new life.

She was a little cranky and hard-pressed to give up her night bottle and because she slept with her foster mother, she is sleeping with her new "mama." She is giggly and excited at the end of a day when her daddy comes home from work and her brother comes home from kindergarten.

In the vast majority of adoptions, there are stories with only tiny tidbits of a secret life that existed and no social workers to help mothers consider their options. Adoption occurs and there is a new permanent life for the abandoned or relinquished baby, but the cycle of poverty has not been broken for the birth mother who is uneducated and homeless and living in the streets, perhaps... or worse.

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit with the family to see how the little one was faring. We met in the street as I was approaching their home and we stepped into a local caf? to pick up my hot chocolate and mom's coffee. The baby was in a sling with a hooded sweater covering her sleepy head. Mom pushed the hood back and there she was... a relaxed and secure Asian face, no stress or vigilance apparent. She was snuggling with her "mama" and people in the neighborhood were engaging with her in the shop. The cashier spoke to her in Mandarin and she lit up. It was plain to see that she understood those tones and was happy to hear them. It was a memory sparked and a safe moment. An adoring adult friend threatened to "eat her up." That is so New York... and then we went home and watched her play and enjoy old plastic hair rollers and a salad spinner. Nothing fancy needed at this age. She is curious and sitting up, proud of her achievement to look out at a new level. She is noticeably unperturbed and comfortable; loved and clearly fitting into her new home and family. And her parents were very happy... deliriously appreciative of her presence in their lives.

Left-handed? Different bodies, different minds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2012) ? We like to think of ourselves as rational creatures, absorbing information, weighing it carefully, and making thoughtful decisions. But, as it turns out, we're kidding ourselves. Over the past few decades, scientists have shown there are many different internal and external factors influencing how we think, feel, communicate, and make decisions at any given moment.

One particularly powerful influence may be our own bodies, according to new research reviewed in the December issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Cognitive scientist Daniel Casasanto, of The New School for Social Research, has shown that quirks of our bodies affect our thinking in predictable ways, across many different areas of life, from language to mental imagery to emotion.

People come in all different shapes and sizes, and people with different kinds of bodies think differently -- an idea Casasanto has termed the 'body-specificity hypothesis.'

One way our bodies appear to shape our decision-making is through handedness. Casasanto and his colleagues explored whether being right-handed or left-handed might influence our judgments about abstract ideas like value, intelligence, and honesty.

Through a series of experiments, they found that, in general, people tend to prefer the things that they encounter on the same side as their dominant hand. When participants were asked which of two products to buy, which of two job applicants to hire, or which of two alien creatures looked more trustworthy, right-handers routinely chose the product, person, or creature they saw on the right side of the page, while left-handers preferred the one on the left. These kinds of preferences have been found in children as young as 5 years old.

But why should our handedness matter when it comes to making such abstract evaluations? It all comes down to fluency, according to Casasanto. "People like things better when they are easier to perceive and interact with," he says. Right-handers interact with their environment more easily on the right than on the left, so they come to associate 'good' with 'right' and 'bad' with 'left.'

This preference for things on our dominant side isn't set in stone. Right-handers who've had their right hands permanently handicapped start to associate 'good' with 'left.' The same goes for righties whose 'good' hand is temporarily handicapped in the laboratory, Casasanto and colleagues found. "After a few minutes of fumbling with their right hand, righties start to think like lefties," says Casasanto. "If you change people's bodies, you change their minds."

It's clear that this association has implications beyond the laboratory. The body-specificity hypothesis may even play a role in voting behavior -- Casasanto points out that many states still use butterfly ballots, with candidates' names listed on the left and right.

"Since about 90 percent of the population is right-handed," says Casasanto, "people who want to attract customers, sell products, or get votes should consider that the right side of a page or a computer screen might be the 'right' place to be."
