Wall St. declines as investors focus on Fed policy meeting

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Monday, pulling back before this week's Federal Reserve meeting that could signal when the Fed is going to begin reducing its bond purchases aimed at helping the economic recovery.

Losses were led by the energy and financial sectors, with both the S&P energy index <.spny> and S&P financial index <.spsy> down 0.8 percent. Shares of Southwestern Energy slid 3 percent to $38.14 and shares of Noble Energy fell 2.1 percent to $62.07 following as a decline in natural gas prices.

Several merger announcements helped to limit losses, along with news of a $1 billion stock repurchase program by Caterpillar that pushed its stock up 1.1 percent to $83.03, making it the biggest support for the Dow.

But the Fed's statement, which is due on Wednesday after a two-day meeting of the Fed's Open Market Committee, kept investors wary of buying. The statement will be scrutinized for hints on when the central bank may begin to scale back its massive bond-buying aimed at stimulating the economy.

Data this week includes July's payrolls report, another key event for the market.

"A lot depends on how (Fed policymakers) interpret the data and how they comment ahead of the employment report. We're looking for clues as to whether tapering is going to begin in September or not," said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 36.86 points, or 0.24 percent, at 15,521.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 6.32 points, or 0.37 percent, at 1,685.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 14.02 points, or 0.39 percent, at 3,599.14.

September is the most likely time for the Fed to begin paring its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, according to a July 22 Reuters poll of economists.

Some investors have worried that big gains in jobs numbers could be enough of an economic pickup to prompt an early end to the Fed's bond buying, a program which has helped stocks rally for much of this year.

But analysts have noted that signs of a stronger economy are more important for the market in the long run. The S&P 500 is up 18.2 percent for the year so far.

Monday's data was less than upbeat. Contracts to purchase previously owned U.S. homes fell in June, retreating from a more than six-year high touched in May as rising mortgage rates were starting to dampen home sales.

Merger activity could give equities support as big deals show that large investors see value in the market.

"It's interesting to me that you've got deal activity this time of the year because normally this is the time of the year when the markets are quite quiet," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer of Palisade Capital Management in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which manages about $4.5 billion in assets.

"To have mergers going on now probably bodes well that the fall is going to be a very active period."

U.S. drugmaker Perrigo agreed to buy Irish drug company Elan for $8.6 billion. U.S.-traded Elan shares rose 3.5 percent to $15.46. Perrigo was the S&P 500's worst percentage decliner, shedding 6.7 percent to $125.17.

Hudson's Bay Co , operator of department store chains Lord & Taylor in the United States and The Bay in Canada, said it would buy luxury retailer Saks Inc for $16 per share. Saks shares rose 4.2 percent to $15.95.

Shares in advertising groups jumped after Publicis and Omnicom said they would merge. Investors bet the deal would create an opening for rivals to poach defecting clients and potentially trigger more deals.

Omnicom shares were down 0.6 percent to $64.75 while smaller rival Interpublic Group gained 4.7 percent to $16.61.

Among the day's big gainers, shares of CF Industries Holdings Inc , the world's second-largest maker of nitrogen fertilizer, jumped 11.8 percent to $202.30 after activist hedge fund Third Point LLC said it had acquired a stake.

In earnings news, Loews Corp , the hotel, energy and financial services conglomerate, posted a jump in second-quarter profit as revenue from its insurance arm, CNA Financial , increased nearly 13 percent. Shares of Loews ended up 0.02 percent at $46.06.

After the closing bell, shares of PMC-Sierra were down 8.7 percent at $6.40 following the release of its results.

With results in from more than half of the S&P 500 companies, 67.2 percent are beating analysts' earnings expectations - in line with the 67 percent average beat over the last four quarters. About 56 percent of the companies are beating revenue expectations, more than the 48 percent of revenue beats in the past four earnings seasons, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Volume was roughly 5.2 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, well below the average daily closing volume of about 6.4 billion this year.

Decliners outpaced advancers on the NYSE by about 2.3 to 1 and on the Nasdaq by a ratio of more than 2 to 1.

Ex-Texas QB Connor Brewer says he?s transferring to Arizona

Connor BrewerAP

Alabama and Notre Dame were said to be among the handful of schools interested in the services of former Texas quarterback Connor Brewer. Turns out, neither will end up getting the ?Horns transfer.

Instead, the redshirt freshman announced via his Twitter account that he will head back to his home state and play for the Arizona Wildcats.

Jason Jewel of 247Sports and Bruce Feldman of CBSSports?previously reported Brewer?s decision. For what it?s worth, UA hasn?t officially commented and likely won?t until Brewer signs his grant-in-aid and enrolls. Brewer would be eligible to play in 2014.

Additionally, 247Sports is reporting that former Longhorns wide receiver Cayleb Jones is looking at the Wildcats as a possible transfer destination as well.

Brewer was an early enrollee at Texas in January of 2012. ?A four-star member of UT?s recruiting class that year, Brewer was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 10 pro-style-quarterback in the country and the No. 5 player at any position in the state of Arizona.?He left Chaparral High School with 100 career touchdown passes, a state record, and won three state championships.

He redshirted his true freshman season and remained buried on the Longhorns? depth chart exiting spring practices.

UFC on Fox 8?s Three Stars: Robbie Lawler among the fighters who stood out

UFC on Fox 8 was filled with split decisions and a fight that UFC president Dana White trashed. However, there were some standout performances. Who were the Three Stars?

No. 1 star -- Robbie Lawler: Of all the fighters who joined the UFC after Strikeforce folded, who did you expect to really shine? It's unlikely Robbie Lawler was on the top five of your list as he was just 2-3 in his five fights before returning to the UFC. He made a complete turnaround, knocking out Josh Koscheck in February before putting a beatdown on Robbie Voelker on Saturday night.

No. 2 star -- Melvin Guillard: Riding a two-fight losing streak, Guillard knew he had to win to keep his job with the UFC. Guillard delivered. He knocked out Mac Danzig with enough power to earn a Knockout of the Night bonus and pick up some job security.

No. 3 star -- Demetrious Johnson: The flyweight champion held onto his belt and convinced anyone who didn't believe in his abilities with a fifth-round submission of John Moraga. Before that submission with an armbar, Johnson beat up on Moraga for 23 minutes and 43 seconds, showing why he holds the belt.

Who stood out from Saturday's fights for you? Speak up on Facebook and Twitter.

Radio, TV personality David 'Kidd' Kraddick dies

David "Kidd" Kraddick, the high-octane radio and TV host of the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show heard on dozens of U.S. radio stations, has died at a charity golf event near New Orleans, a publicist said. Kraddick was 53.

The Texas-based radio and television personality, whose program is syndicated by YEA Networks, died at his Kidd's Kids charity function in the New Orleans suburb of Gretna on Saturday, said publicist Ladd Biro in releasing a network statement.

"He died doing what he loved," said Biro, of the public relations firm Champion Management, speaking with AP by phone early Sunday. He said he had no further details on the death.

Fans left flowers and condolences written on signs left outside his Dallas-area studio.

The website of Kraddick's flagship station KHKS, known as KISS-FM, featured his photo Sunday and remembrances of his career. Fans left online comments such as "morning drive to work in the Dallas traffic will not be the same with out your voice."

"I don't know why his death is affecting me like this. I never met Kidd in person, but I have 'known' him for 15 years or more. He has brought a smile to my face every morning," Tasha Gillespie Sigler wrote Sunday on the Kidd's Kids Facebook page.

"It amazes me how someone you don't even know can become a part of your family," Holly J Smith wrote. She also wrote that "prayers abound for his family, his work family, and for my fellow Kidd Kraddick listening family."

The "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show is heard on more than 75 Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations and is a leader among most-listened-to contemporary morning programs, Biro said. The radio program also is transmitted globally on American Forces Radio Network while the show's cast is also seen weeknights on the nationally syndicated TV show "Dish Nation," he added.

"All of us with YEA Networks and the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader," the network statement said. "Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children."

"He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him," it added.

The Dallas Morning News reported Kraddick had been a staple in the Dallas market since 1984, starting in a late-night debut. The newspaper said he moved into morning show work by the early 1990s in that market and his show began to gain wider acclaim and entered into syndication by 2001 as he gained a following in cities nationwide.

Kraddick would have turned 54 on Aug. 22, according to Biro.

The network statement said the cause of death would be released "at the appropriate time."

Many fans, celebrities included, tweeted condolences and talked about the death on social media sites. One Texas radio station where he was a mainstay ran photographs on its website of Kraddick at the microphone.

Word of Kraddick's passing spread quickly via social media.

"RIP Kidd Kraddick. You were an amazing man and a friend. You are already missed," Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted.

"Oh Man, I just heard Kidd Kraddick died! He's my childhood dj. What a sad day. His poor family. He was always nice 2 me from the beginning," singer Kelly Clarkson tweeted.

Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, only recently announced as the headline act of a planned first-ever Kidd's Kids charity concert in Dallas next month, wrote: "The sad sad news about Kidd Kraddick is shocking. He will be missed greatly."

Richie Tomblin, described as the head golf professional at the Timberlane Country Club in Gretna on its website, told AP that Kraddick wasn't looking well when he saw him getting ready for Saturday's charity event.

"He came out and he borrowed my golf clubs and went out to the driving range," Tomblin told AP when contacted by phone. "It's kind of a freaky situation. He came out. He practiced a little bit. He hit the ball at the first tee and wasn't feeling good and after that I didn't see him."

Tomblin said the hundreds of amateur golfers taking part went ahead with the event Saturday. He added he only found out afterward that Kraddick had died and he was still shaken about it.

"I'm still trying to figure it out. I really don't know what happened. Everyone keeps texting me asking, 'What's going on?' I really don't know," said Tomblin.

He added he was reluctant to even touch the set of clubs Kraddick had borrowed Saturday for his practice swings.

Florida's chances improving on Thompson

Published: Monday, July 29, 2013 at 5:56 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, July 29, 2013 at 5:56 p.m.

Trent Thompson entered Ben Hill Griffin Stadium hours before Friday Night Lights began with the Gators firmly outside his list of top three schools.

While Georgia remained his leader when drills began at Florida Field, an afternoon spent around the UF coaching staff and junior Trenton Brown helped the Gators see a dramatic rise on the 2015 defensive tackle's board.

?They are going to be No. 2 right now,? said Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 292-pound Albany, Ga., native. ?They are just standing out. ... It feels just like home up here for some reason. I'm liking it a lot.?

After visiting Auburn, Georgia, Florida State and Tennessee this summer, Thompson chose not to participate in drills during Florida's recruiting showcase and instead was shadowed by Brown on the sidelines.

A 6-foot-8, 363-pound offensive lineman, Brown graduated in 2011 from Albany (Ga.) Westover High, where Thompson is currently playing. Brown, who was once a Georgia commitment, said he could see a similar recruitment process for Thompson.

?Same way that happened to me,? Brown said. ?I had Georgia and Florida, No. 1 and No. 2, and see how I ended up.?

During his visit to Gainesville, Thompson toured the Gators' weight room and locker room before meeting with members of the UF coaching staff. Among those making the strongest impression was first-year Florida defensive line coach Brad Lawing.

A former assistant coach at South Carolina, Lawing played a part in the development of Gamecocks junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, whose now-famous tackle and fumble recovery against Michigan in the 2013 Outback Bowl still resonates with Thompson.

?When he told me that he got Clowney, I was like, ?Wow,'? Thompson said. ?He was telling me some tips about that big hit against (Michigan). He told me that after Clowney tackles him, how he picks up the ball. He was telling me some pointers to do, and I was like, ?I'll probably need that.'?

Heading into his junior season at Westover, Thompson said he is waiting until next summer to commit to a school. Thompson is also planning to visit Florida again for a game this fall, though he is still unsure of the date.

Incredible Technology: How to See the Big Bang

Editor's Note:?In this weekly series, SPACE.com explores how technology drives space exploration and discovery.

While we may never know all the details of our universe's explosive birth, scientists have been able to piece together quite a bit by studying the ancient light that saturates the cosmos.

The universe burst into existence 13.8 billion years ago in a "Big Bang" that blew space up like a giant balloon. For nearly 400,000 years after that, the universe remained a seething-hot, opaque fog of plasma and energy.

But then, in an epoch known as recombination, the temperature dropped enough to allow the formation of electrically neutral atoms, turning the universe transparent. Photons began to travel freely, and the light we know as the cosmic microwave background?(CMB) pervaded the heavens, filled with clues about the first few moments after creation. [Big Bang to Now in 10 Easy Steps]

"As far as we know, that's as far [back] as we can see ? we get an image of the universe as it was when it was about 389,000 years old," said John Mather of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., senior project scientist for the space agency's James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. Mather and George Smoot won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics?for their work on NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer satellite mission.

"We believe ? although it's not 100 percent proven ? that spots that we see in the microwave map from when the universe was 389,000 years old were actually imposed on it when [the universe] was sub-microseconds old," Mather told SPACE.com. "There's an interpretive step there, but it's probably right."

Tiny fluctuations in the map

The CMB, which was first detected in 1964, is strikingly uniform. But COBE discovered in 1992 that it's studded with tiny temperature fluctuations. These variations have since been mapped out more precisely by two other space missions, NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe?(WMAP) and the European Planck spacecraft.

The hot and cold areas ? which differ from their homogeneous surroundings at a level of just 1 part per 100,000 ? signify areas featuring different densities.

"You can imagine a cold spot being a gravitational overdensity; it's sitting at the bottom of a shallow gravity well," said Al Kogut of NASA Goddard, who has worked on COBE, WMAP and other efforts to map the CMB. [Gallery: Planck Spacecraft Sees Big Bang Relics]

"Light that's coming to us from the bottom of this gravity well has to climb uphill, so it's losing energy," Kogut told SPACE.com. "So the cold spots in the microwave sky are the places where there's extra matter and energy ? extra gravitational potential. The hot spots are the voids."

These density fluctuations were the seeds that eventually gave rise to stars, galaxies?and all other structure that we observe in the universe today, scientists say.

Massive inflation

Most researchers think the "bang" portion of the Big Bang came during a dramatic and extremely brief period of inflation, which began about 10 to the minus 36 seconds ? one trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second ? after the universe's birth.

During inflation, the theory goes, the universe expanded faster than the speed of light, doubling in size perhaps 100 times or more in just a few tiny fractions of a second. (Einstein's theory of special relativity holds that no information or matter can travel faster than light through space, but this rule does not apply to inflation, which was an expansion of space itself.)

"Inflation theory?is the idea of going from spontaneous quantum fluctuations to something of macroscopic size," said WMAP principal investigator Charles Bennett, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. (The WMAP spacecraft, which launched in 2001, stopped gathering data in 2010.)

The precision mapping of the CMB performed by COBE, WMAP and Planck has provided strong support for inflation, helping cement its position as the leading explanation of the universe's first few moments.

"Why the cosmic microwave background temperature is the same at different spots in the sky would be a mystery if it was not for inflation saying, well, our whole sky came from this tiny region," Bennett told SPACE.com. "So the idea of inflation helps answer some of these mysteries, and it explains where these fluctuations came from."

Still, the CMB map has yet to reveal a clear "smoking gun" for inflation, Bennett and Kogut said. But they believe that smoking gun may well be there, just waiting to be discovered.

The signature of gravity waves

According to inflation theory, the dramatic expansion of space in the first few moments after the universe's birth would have generated gravity waves, which in turn produced a type of polarization in the CMB known as "B-modes."

Spotting B-modes would thus put inflation on incredibly firm footing, and reveal more details about the process ? including, most likely, the energy levels at which it occurred. (Some scientists think these energies were so great that the laws of physics blended together during the inflation period).

This signature has not been detected in the CMB map yet, but that may simply be because it's so faint, researchers say.

"There are a few groups now out searching for these B-modes," Bennett said. "It's sort of the current Holy Grail of the business here."

Bennett and Kogut are among the scientists in the hunt. Bennett is leading the development of an instrument called the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), which is currently under construction and could begin operations in Chile's Atacama Desert sometime next year.

Kogut, for his part, is principal investigator of a balloon-borne detector called PIPER (short for Primordial Inflation Polarization Explorer), which he hopes will make its first flight in 2014 or 2015.

Detecting the B-modes is a tough proposition, since it will likely require spotting a pattern that differs from the background by just a few parts per billion. But Kogut and Bennett both expressed optimism that somebody will find the signal, if it does indeed exist at the level predicted by some of the leading inflation models.

"The sensitivity of the instruments has been making steady progress," Kogut said. "In order to see the inflationary signal, we probably need to improve by another factor of three or four."

"But the sensitivity has already, since the first detection [of the CMB], improved by about a factor of 100,000," he added. "So I think it would be unduly pessimistic to say that all this great progress over the last 40 years, almost 50 years, is about to come to a screeching halt right before we discover this new signal that's right on the borderline of what we can and can't detect right now."

Family spends Harborfest weekend raising money for son with brain cancer

Two blocks from the crowds, rides and fried Oreos of this year's Oswego Harborfest, Joshua Brown and his stepdad, John Ford, chat quietly under a tent in their front yard.

Although Oswego's biggest summer celebration is in full swing, they're spending Saturday afternoon selling T-shirts to raise money to bring Brown to and from Upstate Medical University's hospital.

Brown was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma, a rare form of brain cancer, when he was 10 years old. He's now a soft-spoken 15-year-old with faint scars lining the left side of his head.

"It was devastating," said Brown, about first hearing his diagnosis.

By mid-afternoon on July 27, Ford and Brown had sold 17 "Joshua's Wish" T-shirts in front of their house on 36 W. Seneca St. The money pays for gas to bring Brown to Syracuse for check-ups and treatments.

"The trip to Syracuse every day costs us $20," said Ford, Brown's stepdad. "We're not making a profit off the shirts. The gas is our main concern and the gas prices keep going up and up. We don't have relief. It's a tiring fight to keep our fire going."

Ford set up a "Joshua's Wish" Walk-A-Thon in Oswego's Franklin Square Park last month, but he accidentally scheduled it the same day as Paige's Butterfly Run, which drew 1,651 runners to its 5K race. Joshua's Walk drew 36 people.

"Joshua's Wish" is to visit Disney World again with his family. His first visit was arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation when he was 13, and it was an "amazing" experience for him.

"My wish is spend time with my sisters, my brother and my parents," he said.

Brown sits calmly in the tent. He takes medicine several times a day to control seizures and stomach pains. His head doesn't hurt much today, he said.

Brown began getting headaches when he was playing football as a child. His mother thought he was being hit too hard during the football games, or that his helmet was to blame.

When Brown went to Syracuse for a brain scan, they found a softball-sized tumor growing in his head. Although surgeons removed as much of the tumor as they could, it grew back. Now the tumors have spread down his neck and spine, Ford said.

A passing woman stops by the tent.

"Are you the one who's sick?" she asks, gripping Brown's shoulder. "I had breast cancer. You keep fighting it, OK? You keep going."

Brown nods.

"I hope it goes away," he said.

Heavy rains cause flash flooding in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? A series of thunderstorms moving across western North Carolina has triggered major flash flooding, inundating roads, apartments and parts of several counties.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1buP7OY ) that Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright is telling residents to stay indoors and away from flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

No injuries have been reported.

Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday. Catawba County officials say some of the worst flash flooding in decades followed a nearly stationary weather system that dumped more than 12 inches of rain.

Several miles of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County was closed for a short time Saturday due to high water.

It is at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month.

Driving is so 10 years ago, studies find

Driving in the US peaked back in 2004, according to two recent studies. And due to factors like increased used of mass transit and less interest in car ownership, driving rates may never recover to the levels of their early-aughts heyday.

The PIRG study made a number of intriguing claims, all of which pointed to the fact that driving in the U.S. peaked in 2004. And due to a range of factors -- notably, the increased use of mass transit and less interest in car ownership -- it's unlikely that driving rates will ever fully recover.

Now,?Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has published a study of his own that seems to back the PIRG's claims.?

To reach his conclusions, Sivak examined driving trends in the U.S. from 1984 to 2011. He paid particular attention to the distances traveled per licensed driver, per vehicle, and per household.?

On each of those counts, the figures have plummeted since 2004.

According to a press release, the number of miles driven per licensed driver and per household have both tumbled 9 percent. The number of miles traveled per registered vehicle is off 5 percent:?

The latest rates (2011) are: distance driven per person, 8,494 miles (down from 9,314 in 2004); distance driven per licensed driver, 12,492 miles (down from 13,711 in 2004); distance driven per household, 22,069 miles (down from 24,349 in 2004); and distance driven per registered vehicle, 11,318 miles (down from 11,946 in 2004).

Like the PIRG, Sivak says that Americans haven't simply been driving less because of the slumping economy. American driving peaked in 2004, years before the Great Recession hit, and the figures haven't recovered at the same pace as the financial sector.

In other words, Americans (and likely others around the world) think about cars and transportation differently now, causing a shift in our driving habits.

Egypt's military and Muslim Brotherhood in violent showdown

Egypt's health ministry says at least 65 are dead in violent clashes Saturday between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. The violence indicates a willingness by police to use firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests.

Security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted president early Saturday, killing at least 65 protesters, the Health Ministry said, in the country's bloodiest incidence of violence since the military deposed Mohammed Morsi.

At a makeshift hospital near the site of the battles in eastern Cairo, doctors struggled to cope with the flood of dozens of wounded.

The extent of the carnage underlined the willingness of police to unleash deadly firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests demanding the reinstatement of Morsi. Military-backed authorities are feeling emboldened after millions turned out for nationwide rallies Friday called by the army chief in support of a tough hand against what he called "terrorism."

Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, a longtime pro-democracy campaigner who backed the military's ouster of Morsi, raised one of the few notes of criticism of the bloodshed in the new military-backed leadership.

"I highly condemn the excessive use of force and the fall of victims," he wrote in a tweet, though he did not directly place blame for the use of force. He added that he is "working very hard and in all directions to end this confrontation in a peaceful manner."

The bloodshed also pointed to the Islamists' readiness to challenge the security forces as Morsi's supporters try to win over public support for their cause.

The fighting, which began before dawn and stretched out over several hours, was the deadliest bouts of violence since the military ousted Morsi on July 3 in the wake of massive protests demanding his removal. Soon after Morsi's fall, more than 50 of his supporters were killed in a similar outbreak of violence outside a headquarters of the Republican Guard.

A leading figure of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed el-Beltagy, blamed the violence on army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's call for rallies on Friday.

"This is the mandate el-Sissi took last night ? to commit massacres and bloodshed against peaceful protesters denouncing the military coup," el-Beltagy said in a statement on his Facebook page.

The clashes began after a crowd of Morsi supporters late Friday moved out of their main sit-in camp where they have been located for nearly three weeks, in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque.

Some of them installed themselves on a nearby major boulevard, blocking traffic. They began to set up tents there, planning to stay there at least three days, said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Brotherhood spokesman. Others went up on a nearby highway overpass, he told The Associated Press.

Police moved in and fired tear gas to break up the crowds at around 2 a.m., and protesters responded with volleys of stones in battles near a memorial to former President Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981.

Gunshots also rang out, seemingly from both sides, said one witness, Mosa'ab Elshamy, a freelance photographer, though he could not tell who started firing.

Armed residents of the area also joined the police side, and there were also plainclothes police carrying handguns, he said. The security forces "felt a bit more unrestrained than other times," said Elshamy, who has extensively covered other clashes with police the past two years. "It was clear they had no restraints."

Ragab Nayel Ali, one of the pro-Morsi protesters, said security forces fired first with tear gas and birdshot. "Protesters replied by hurling rocks and started building walls," said Ali, who was injured in an accident as he ferried wounded on his motorcycle from the fighting to a field hospital.

At the makeshift clinic set up at the Rabaah al-Adawiya encampment, men shouted "God is great," and women wailed as bodies were loaded into ambulances to be taken for examination at hospitals. Bodies of more than a dozen men lay on the blood-splattered floor with white sheets over them.

"They aimed at killing the people. They aimed the head and the neck," said Ahmed Abdullah, a doctor at the field clinic, as he wiped tears from his eyes.

A medical official at a nearby hospital said many of those killed had bullet wounds at chest level or higher. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb said that at least 65 people were killed in the violence. Nine more were killed in clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria since Friday, he said. Nationwide, nearly 750 people were wounded in various incidents of violence, 270 of them in the Cairo bloodshed, he said.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Ahmed Aref, told reporters that 66 were killed in the Cairo violence and another 61 were "clinically dead." He did not further explain their condition, but his comments suggested the official toll could go higher.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees the police force, said in a statement that residents in the district began clashing with the pro-Morsi marchers when their protest blocked a major artery. The ministry said police who intervened were trying to break up the two sides by firing tear gas.

Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief and presidential candidate who lost to Morsi last year, called on the government to make clear what happened.

"Yesterday, masses went out to the streets against terrorism, violence and bloodshed. Do not forget that," the secular-leaning Moussa said in a statement.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Hani Abdel-Latif said 14 policemen and 37 army troops were wounded in the violence. He said that two of the policemen had gunshot wounds to the head. He claimed that the police only used tear gas against the protesters.

He warned against "following calls for non-peaceful protests."

It was not clear how troops could have been wounded in the fighting, since the army did not appear to be involved in the fighting. Elshamy said troops' only involvement he saw was that some fired into the air at one point, causing both police and protesters to back up for a short time.

Interim President Adly Mansour told the private TV station al-Hayat that his government seeks to include everyone, but it will not accept lawlessness, blocked roads and attacks on state institutions.

"I can't negotiate with anyone who has committed a crime. But those who were duped or those who want to belong to Egyptian society, we welcome them," he said. But he added: "The state must interfere (against lawlessness) firmly."

The violence is certain to only further deepen the divides over the military coup that ended Morsi's one year in office. Millions joined four days of protests that began June 30 demanding Morsi be removed, accusing him of empowering his Brotherhood and failing to resolve the country's problems.

Many of Morsi's opponents, including liberals, leftists and moderate Muslim, secular and Christian Egyptians, have now enthusiastically embraced the military after el-Sissi's removal of Morsi. The military-backed interim leadership has pushed a fast-track transition plan to return to a democratically elected government by early next year.

Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, reject the new political order, and say the military illegally ousted the country's first democratically elected leader. They have kept up their sit-in and held near daily rallies elsewhere in the capital to demand Morsi be reinstated.

While the main sit-in has been peaceful, protests elsewhere have repeatedly turned violent, and some 180 people have been killed in clashes nationwide. Each side has accused the other of sparking clashes.

El-Sissi called for Friday's mass rallies to give the military a mandate to fight "violence and terrorism," raising speculation that he may be planning a crackdown against the pro-Morsi rallies.

Giant crowds responded to his call Friday, packing main squares in cities around the country, voicing support for a tough hand against Islamists. Morsi supporters also held large rallies Friday, although smaller than those of the pro-military camp.

The rival demonstrations erupted into violence in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria that left eight dead.

More than 100 Morsi supporters had taken refuge in a central mosque in Alexandria, and held 17 of their rivals hostage overnight inside to try and fend off a security siege of the building. A security official said the hostages were freed and those inside the mosque arrested. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media

Also on Friday, authorities announced that Morsi was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Morsi has been held incommunicado since being taken into military custody on July 3.

Recession Hit Those With Mental Health Problems the Hardest ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on July 27, 2013

Unemployment rates for people with mental health problems rose more than twice as much than for people without mental health problems during the recession, according to new research.

Researchers from King?s College London also found that this gap in employment rates was even greater for men and for those with low levels of education.

For the study, the researchers collected data in 27 European Union countries from more than 20,000 people in 2006 and again in 2010. Using the Eurobarometer survey, they assessed mental health, stigmatizing attitudes, socio-demographic information, such as age, gender, education level, and current employment rate.

At the start of the study, unemployment was at 7.1 percent for people without mental health problems, compared to 12.7 percent for people with mental health problems. In 2010, this rose to 9.8 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively.

This corresponds to an increase of 5.5 percent for people with mental health problems vs 2.7 percent for people without mental health problems.

?The economic recession has had enormous impact across much of Europe, but there is little information about the specific impact of the recession on groups who are already vulnerable to social exclusion, specifically, people with mental health problems,? said?Sara Evans-Lacko, Ph.D., lead author of the study from King?s College London?s Institute of Psychiatry.

?This is the first study to show that the European economic crisis has had a profound impact on people with mental health problems, compared to those without.?

The study also found that men and individuals with lower levels of education were significantly more likely to be unemployed after the recession. In 2010, 21.7 percent of men with mental health problems were unemployed, compared to 13.7 percent in 2006, the researchers report.

The researchers also found that stigmatizing attitudes ? especially beliefs regarding how dangerous people with mental health problems might be ? were an important factor contributing to the rise in unemployment.

Living in a country where a higher proportion of individuals believed that people with mental health problems were dangerous was associated with higher levels of unemployment for those people, according to the researchers.

The study also found that, in addition to higher unemployment, men with mental health problems and individuals with lower levels of education were less likely to seek help. They also had more negative attitudes to mental health, which may require specific forms of outreach, the researchers postulate.

?Our study emphasizes that one important implication of stigma and discrimination is exclusion from employment,? said Graham Thornicroft, Ph.D., co-author of the study.

?During periods of economic recession, attitudes to people with mental health problems may harden, further deepening social exclusion,? he said. ?Governments need to be aware of these risks, and employers need to be aware of their legal duty to comply with the Equality Act to support people with mental health problems coming into, and staying in, employment.?

'Conjuring' home residents can't conjure privacy

Movies

"The Conjuring," which topped last week's box office, was called "too scary" by some critics, who noted that the haunted-house film was given its R rating by the MPAA not for gore or language, but for pure fear potential. Now it's become a real-life horror for the family who lives in the Harrisville, R.I., home that inspired the movie.

Norma Sutcliffe, who said she is in her 60s, told Jim Baron of the Rhode Island newspaper The Woonsocket Call that fans of the film have been making pilgrimages to her home. The visits are disturbing her and her 70-year-old husband, who isn't in good health, she said.

Warner Bros.

"The Conjuring" is supposedly based on true events.

?We haven?t slept in days,? Sutcliffe told the newspaper. ?Because we wake up at 2 in the morning (and) there are people with flashlights in our yard.? People call on the phone and ask, 'Is this ?The Conjuring? house?' "

The Sutcliffes bought the house 25 years ago from the Perrons, the family depicted in the film, The Call reported. Andrea Perron wrote a trilogy of books about the supposed haunting of the house.

Sutcliffe said she received no money from the moviemakers and is angry they distributed photos of her house, making it easy for fans to find her address. A lawyer has told her she probably has no case to sue, and she said she doesn't want money, just to be left alone.

Sutcliffe told The Call she has seen the movie and doesn't think much of it. ?I just laughed at the whole thing," she told the paper. "I thought it was so ironically ridiculous. I thought it was an insult to the Perrons.?

'Disappointing' Church did not take lead on marriage

Christian Concern says it is "deeply disappointing" the Church did not speak out as strongly on gay marriage as it has on payday lenders.

The advocacy group said the headlines around the Archbishop of Canterbury's criticism of payday lender Wonga this week demonstrated the potential impact of the Church if it had made similar statements against the legislation that brought in gay marriage this month.

Archbishop Justin Welby said in an interview in Total Politics this week that he wanted to "compete" Wonga "out of existence". ?

The story was widely publicised in the press but also caused some embarrassment for the Church of England when the Financial Times revealed the Church had indirect links to Wonga through its stake in a venture capital fund that has invested millions of dollars into the payday lender.

Head of Christian Concern, Andrea Minichiello Williams said: "We called on Archbishop Welby and the bishops many times, asking them to stand strong for marriage and speak out.

"The news this week shows the possible impact they could have had on the marriage debate. It's deeply disappointing that they didn't take the lead and make similarly robust statements about marriage when it mattered."

Christian Concern also strongly criticised the Prime Minister's plans to "export" gay marriage abroad.

David Cameron said in an address this week that he wanted the team of ministers and officials that put the gay marriage bill together to now work on promoting similar legislation in other countries.

Christian Concern said: "It's important that not just David Cameron, but also his advisers, know that there will be a political price to pay for such disregard of those who believe in traditional marriage."

The group is not the first to accuse the Church of England of not being strong enough in its defence of traditional marriage.

The chairman of the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans and Primate of Kenya, Archbishop Eliud Wabukala said: "We are painfully aware that the Episcopal Church of the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada continue to promote a false gospel and yet both are still received as in good standing by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

"Furthermore, the Church of England itself, the historic mother church of the Communion, seems to be advancing along the same path.

"While defending marriage, both the Archbishops of York and Canterbury appeared at the same time to approve of same-sex Civil Partnerships during parliamentary debates on the UK's 'gay marriage' legislation, in contradiction to the historic biblical teaching on human sexuality reaffirmed by the 1998 Lambeth Conference."

Redskins' DE Jarvis Jenkins suspended 4 games

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Jarvis Jenkins is the eighth Washington Redskins player to receive an NFL drugs-related suspension in 22 months, sanctioned for four games without pay Friday for testing positive for a banned performance enhancing substance.

Expected to start at defensive end, Jenkins will instead miss the first four games of the regular season. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 30, following the Week 4 game against the Oakland Raiders.

Jenkins, who was on the practice field at training camp working with the first-string unit when the suspension was announced, released a statement saying he was "shocked and confused" to learn that he had tested positive for what he called "an obscure substance." Then he addressed reporters at length following the practice, apologizing to fans, the team and his parents.

"It was a simple mistake," he said, "but I'm accepting my responsibilities like a man."

Jenkins said he takes pre-workout and recovery supplements. Every NFL player has been instructed not to take supplements that don't have an "NSF" label ? a label that means they've been certified as acceptable under an agreement between the league and players' union ? but Jenkins said he nevertheless took an over-the-counter supplement that didn't have the label.

Jenkins said he checked the ingredients of the supplement, but he learned that's not a failsafe method. In March, he was informed that he had tested positive for a substance women take for breast cancer and that has also been used by athletes in connection with steroids.

He appealed the suspension, but the league ruled against him.

"I thought I was going to get off on it, and I didn't," he said. "The NFL has strict rules. ... They tell us we're responsible for what's in our body. Obviously I'm being led as an example."

Jenkins' backup was expected to be Adam Carriker, but Carriker had a third surgery Thursday for a right knee injury and is unlikely to play this season. Chris Baker, who has been moved from nose tackle, and Kedric Golston are the leading candidates to start while Jenkins is away. Jenkins is allowed to practice during training camp and can play in preseason games.

Jenkins said the Redskins do a good job of educating players about the NFL's drug policies, but the results are debatable. Left tackle Trent Williams, tight end Fred Davis and cornerback Phillip Buchanon served four-game sanctions in 2011. Cornerback Cedric Griffin and tackle Jordan Black were docked four games last year.

Linebacker Rob Jackson, like Jenkins, is suspended for the first four games this year. Safety Tanard Jackson is serving an indefinite suspension and could be reinstated this year.

Each suspension comes with its own backstory ? Williams, Davis and Jackson were sanctioned for substance abuse, the rest for performance-enhancing drugs ? but coach Mike Shanahan acknowledged the troubling trend.

"We have emphasized it," Shanahan said. "But maybe not enough."

A second-round pick in 2011, Jenkins missed his rookie season with a right knee injury. He returned last year to start 14 games and felt primed for a breakout season.

"It's always a tough blow for your football team," Shanahan said. "Hopefully our players will learn that without the label of NSF, you can't take any supplements, because you never know what's going to be in the supplements. We'll pay the price for it. Hopefully our players will learn from it."

Financier with GOP ties gets $5M to move firm to Greenwich

A $2 billion money-lending enterprise headed by a major benefactor of the Connecticut GOP is moving its headquarters from out of state to Greenwich, lured by $5 million in economic incentives approved by the administration of Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Malloy's office announced the deal Friday between the state and Fifth Street Finance Corp., a Nasdaq-traded company based in White Plains, N.Y., employing about 50 people there. Terms of the deal call for the firm to add an additional 46 positions to its Greenwich workforce over the next decade.

The firm is run by Leonard Tannenbaum, whose state and federal filings show he gave $15,000 to the state Republican Party in March of this year, earning him a seat on the dais at the party's biggest fundraiser of the year, where GOP leaders assailed Malloy.

Republicans have been highly critical of the economic incentives awarded by Malloy's administration to big business, questioning the return on investment and saying that the state should lower taxes and fix the regulatory climate instead.

"If the governor uses these grants to attract businesses that have longterm staying power and peripheral benefits, I think it's good," Tannenbaum told Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.

"The governor, for us, is going to make far more revenue for the state of Connecticut than the amount of money that he's giving us by many, many multiples."

Records also show that Tannenbaum, 41, a Greenwich resident who last year started his own Keeping America Competitive bipartisan political action committee, donated $1,000 to the campaign of Malloy's 2010 adversary Tom Foley.

"When it comes to something as important as job creation, politics never enters the governor's mind," said Andrew Doba, a spokesman for Malloy. "He is concerned with one thing -- creating good paying jobs with good benefits for Connecticut residents."

Tannenbaum's goal is to reach 100 employees in Greenwich within three years, surpassing the benchmarks stipulated by the state.

"We'll easily be able to hit those targets," Tannenbaum said.

James Velgot, the firm's executive director of marketing and brand management, echoed Tannenbaum.

"This company of ours is on quite a trajectory," Velgot said. --Len really believes in Connecticut and wants to help create jobs."

In addition to Connecticut, Tannenbaum said New York and Florida were competing for his business, which lends money to private equity companies.

"My business is portable," Tannenbaum said. "We could actually do our business out of Miami, too. My personal view was that Connecticut was the place to go."

Tannenbaum is in the process of trying to buy the former corporate headquarters of Nestle Waters North America at 777 W. Putnam Ave. to facilitate the move, a transaction that is expected to cost some $39 million.

Fifth Street Finance will receive a 10-year $4 million loan from the state Department of Economic and Community Development to build out 44,000 square feet of space at the site, $3 million of which is forgivable.

The state sweetened the deal with a $500,000 grant for job training and a $500,000 grant to install a fuel cell, wind or solar-powered energy system. The deal is binding for 10 years.

"So if I leave within 10 years, you just give back the money," Tannenbaum said.

State Sen. L. Scott Frantz, R-36th District, who represents Greenwich and parts of Stamford and New Canaan, embraced the deal in a statement issued by the governor's office.

"Connecticut has long been a world leader in finance and investment management," Frantz said.

"We must focus on helping this important segment of our economy remain and grow in our own state."

Tannenbaum expressed his support for Malloy's efforts to attract companies in the biotech sector to Connecticut with economic incentives.

At the same time, he questioned the wisdom of giving a $20 million forgivable loan to Swiss financial services giant UBS in 2011 to maintain a presence in Stamford and at least 2,000 employees in the state until 20 17.

UBS previously had 3,500 employees on its payroll in Connecticut, however.

"I think a mistake he potentially made was UBS," Tannenbaum said of Malloy. "So if their strategic direction is to leave the state, does that make sense?"
