Reading to the Ladies ? Motherhood Is An Art

The summer is coming to an end and school will start on Tuesday. Along with this will come an end to the daily ?reading to the ladies.?

In our neighborhood there are two elderly ladies who have houses side by side. One of them is 89 and the other is 96. They are sisters. The 96 year old has lived here for 70 years. She was widowed in her 40?s and has lived alone since then. The 89 year old has never been married and spent her adult life living in Chicago until 20 years ago when her sister with whom she always lived with died and she came back to the area to be near family.

When we moved here 8 years ago both of the ladies were in fine shape. They mowed their own lawns, tended to their gardens and canned large amounts of vegetables. Through the years their health has deteriorated and we have had to wait patiently for them to return home several times from extended hospital stays. Today they both still live at home but have caretakers who live with them and tend to their care and the housework.

These are two of the sweetest ladies I know. They have watched our family grow and have become a part of our family. We visit with each other and help each other out. My kids think of them as extra grandmas.

This past March, when visiting with the 96 year old, she told me how lonely she had been. All she can do at this point is really just sit and watch television.

That?s when I got an idea. My 7 year old daughter, Iris, loves to read. Being in 1^st grade at the time, she didn?t have any homework after school. My kids loved visiting the neighbors but didn?t go every day so I established ?reading to the ladies.? Once the 89 year old got wind of the kids reading to her sister she wanted in on it too!

Iris and my 5 year old son, Bency would go to the ladies? houses every day after school and read to them a few short stories, visit with them and then come home. This has continued throughout the summer almost every day. Iris enjoys doing this because she LOVES reading to people and the ladies enjoy the company of the kids. The caretaker for the 89 year old is a Polish immigrant, speaks broken English, loves to cook and loves my kids too. She is always making up homemade cookies for the kids and fresh popped popcorn on the stove to send home with them after they are done reading!

Once school starts, I?m sure there will be homework so they will only be able to go on the weekends. I?m going to try to keep this going as long as I can because the summer of ?reading to the ladies? will always be a wonderful memory!

Caio Ibelli, Davey Cathels and Matt Pagan advance to Round 2 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz

Brazil?s Caio Ibelli, Australia?s Davey Cathels and America?s Matt Pagan secured their place in their second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 1 (Round of 144) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Tuesday, August 28.

Reunion Island?s Hugo Dubosc, Australia?s Jerome Forrest and America?s Cory Arrambide made the Round 2 cut as well after managing to get hold of second place in their respective heats.

The day promised to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action as some of the best surfing talent from around the globe converged to the exotic Zarautz, ready to show what they are made of in clean one-to-two foot waves.

The fourth heat of Round 1 saw Ibelli take on Dubosc, Portugal?s Justin Mujica and local talent Julen Egiguren for the Round 2 spot.

The Brazilian surfer got off to a relatively slow start, but he continued to build momentum and eventually unleashed a flurry of exquisite tricks in the final minutes of the heat to post a 7.50 and 7.10 on the score-board, thus finishing with a ?heat-total of 14.60 points.

Dubosc scored a 5.17 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an additional 5.67 points in the final minutes of the heat, thus clinching second place with a heat-total of 10.84 points.

Mujica finished in third place with a two-wave total of 9.67 points, while Egiguren had to settle for bottom-place after registering a heat-total of 8.07 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.

Cathels got the better of his compatriot Forrest, Reunion Island?s Frederic Robin and Venezuela?s Denny Mendoza in the fifth heat to get his place confirmed in the next round.

The Australian powerhouse scored a 6.33 off his first business-wave and backed it up with an impressive 7.00-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 13.33 points.

Forrest successfully made the Round 2 cut as well after scoring a 4.33 and 3.53 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 7.86 points, a score that proved sufficient to earn him second place.

Robin and Mendoza got removed from the contention for the event title after finishing with a heat-total of 5.86 and 4.36 points respectively.

The sixth heat of Round 1 saw Pagan claim top honours after scoring a 5.13 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an impressive 7.27 points to finish with a heat-total of 12.40 points.

Arrambide finished behind his fellow countryperson in second place after reaping a 5.77 and 6.57 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 12.34 points, thus accompany Pagan into the next round.

Portugal?s Jose Ferreira and his compatriot Eduardo Fernandes were forced to make a quick exit from the competition due to their bottom-two finish following a heat-total of 11.84 and 9.87 points respectively.

California lawmakers approve workers' comp overhaul

SACRAMENTO ? A bipartisan bloc of lawmakers ? after being personally lobbied by Gov. Jerry Brown ? approved an overhaul of California's $17-billion workers' compensation insurance program that promises to hike benefits for injured workers and cut costs for employers.

On the last night of the legislative session, lawmakers gave final approval to a bill boosting payments to permanently disabled victims of on-the-job accidents by about $740 million a year and handing employers a major break on workers' comp insurance premiums ? set to go up as much as 18% in January.

Approval was essential for both workers and employers, the governor told legislators Friday as the package flew through both chambers. The Assembly approved the bill 66 to 4 and the Senate followed with a 34-4 vote, only three days after the measure had its first legislative hearing.

The governor called the proposal an extraordinary bill "to reform a broken system." The legislation would "avert an imminent crisis where workers suffer and rates will skyrocket," he said. "We have the chance to make the workers' compensation system better ? much better ? for workers and cheaper for business."

Brown has 30 days to sign the legislation.

The package, which emerged last week after months of negotiations between business and labor groups, streamlines the no-fault-insurance system. Besides the benefit increases, the money-saving provisions of the bill are aimed at reducing litigation and delays in medical treatment.

The cost-cutting comes at a crucial time for the 14.4 million employees in the state as well as their 864,000 employers.

Spiraling healthcare inflation is putting pressure on insurers, and experts estimated that employers would be likely to face big hikes in the premiums they pay when their policies renewed. Supporters warned that without the bill, insurance rate increases would possibly spur layoffs as the state is struggling to revive the economy.

The deal-closer came at midday when Brown secured the support of Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento). The senator wanted and the governor agreed to support a special fund to provide $120 million a year to victims of catastrophic accidents who can't return to work.

Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Santa Ana), the coauthor of the bill, SB 863, called the package "a historical compromise." It was put together during nine months of discussions among a small group of labor unions and large employers, including Safeway Inc., Walt Disney Co. and Grimmway Farms, the state's largest organic grower.

"We took the time to actually listen to each other," said Angie Wei, a lobbyist for the California Labor Federation who was a key labor negotiator in the lengthy talks that produced the last-minute compromise.

Other workers' compensation participants, such as lawyers, doctors, chiropractors and other injured-worker service providers, complained that they were frozen out of most of the deliberations until August when the bill emerged in the statehouse.

The bill's major opponents ? advocates for some injured workers and the lawyers who represent them ? feared that the legal rewrite was being rushed and could create unintended consequences that could actually reduce benefits.

But SB 863's principal author, Sen. Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) disagreed. He said change is needed to restore permanent disability benefits taken away from accident victims by a 2004 law pushed through the Legislature by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"This reverses a wrong that happened eight years ago," De Leon said, "and puts $740 million directly back in the hands of injured workers."

Kippt, Pinboard Help Digg Users Find New Home For Old Data [Here's How]

After Digg's long fall, Betaworks acquired the site in July and put its News.me team in charge. Six weeks later, the new operators launched a complete overhaul of Digg. However, while interest in Digg had remained (a surprising amount, according to new CEO John Borthwick), the new site removed user access to old data, i.e. everything Digg users had ever posted to the old iterations of the site, Diggs, comments, articles, etc. Yesterday, the team rectified that and actually seems to have gone beyond what is usually characteristic for new management or a deadpooled/acquired startup to do in terms of access to historic data. They launched the "Digg Archive," which gives users of the old site (i.e. before July 2012) a tool to retrieve their submissions, saved articles, and more (by JSON and CSV) and by partnering with Kippt and Pinboard to give old data a new home.
