Unemployment rates fall in most U.S. election swing states

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The unemployment rate fell last month in most states considered key to the U.S. presidential election, including Nevada and Colorado, data from the Labor Department showed on Friday.

Overall, regional and state unemployment rates were generally lower in September. Jobless rates fell in 41 states and the District of Columbia in September from August, rose in six and were unchanged in three states.

Compared with last year, jobless rates fell in 44 states and the District of Columbia and rose in six.

The contest between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney is heating up in states where polls suggest voters are undecided.

The election is on November 6, a little under three weeks.

The national unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent in September, it lowest since President Obama took office nearly four years ago.

But the slow pace of economic growth and high level of unemployment have been a focal point of the campaigns ahead of the election. Of the eleven states where the polls are currently tight, about half had unemployment rates above the national average.

Nevada, considered to be one of the battlegrounds of the election, had the highest unemployment rate in the country at 11.8 percent, down from 12.1 percent in August. In Colorado, the jobless rate fell to 8 percent in September from 8.2 percent the previous month.

Unemployment fell in eight other such swing states, with North Carolina at 9.6 percent and Wisconsin down to 7.3 percent. Virginia and New Hampshire held steady, while Pennsylvania's jobless rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1.

Social media sensation dies of cancer at age 13

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Lane Goodwin, a small-town boy who won a huge Facebook following for his thumbs-up attitude about his cancer, has lost his battle with the disease.

The 13-year-old Kentuckian died Wednesday night, eliciting an outpouring from his heartbroken followers.

The announcement of Lane's death came on his Facebook page, which had 369,000 followers as of Thursday. The announcement said the boy from Beech Grove who loved fishing and soccer had "gained his angel wings."

University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari was among the many whose thoughts and prayers were with Lane's family.

"Let's all give one more thumbs up for Lane," Calipari tweeted.

Lane was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and some Cardinals fans held up signs in support of Lane during the baseball playoffs.

Lane was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2010. He completed chemotherapy treatments late that year, but had a relapse in the summer of 2011.

The Thumbs-up for Lane campaign, started as a way to encourage the boy and his family, spread worldwide on social media. His followers included country music stars, athletes, politicians and Ernie Brown ? the cable television star known as "The Turtleman."

Brown was Lane's favorite celebrity. The homespun star known for getting rid of unwanted reptiles and other critters with his bare hands had visited Lane's home in western Kentucky a few weeks ago. They hit it off from the start, Brown recalled Thursday.

Lane told Brown how he once hooked a shark. He showed Brown his room, filled with pictures of "Turtleman."

"We sat there and talked and talked and just had a good old time," said Brown, who choked up with emotion while remembering his young friend. "We got up and did the 'Turtleman' dance until he got worn out."

Brown said Lane was an inspiration to others.

"People really looked up to him," he added. "He sure made his mark in the world and he'll never be forgotten."

Lane's family issued a statement remembering his "beautiful smile" and his Christian faith." The family thanked his many supporters for their "incredible display of human kindness."

"We have been amazed and touched by the worldwide thumbs-up movement in honor of Lane," the family said.

"Lane believed that the awareness this movement brought for childhood cancers would lead to a cure. Lane's legacy will live on as we move forward with the commitment we made to him to find a cure."

Funeral services were set for Monday and will be streamed live over the Internet, according to a post on the Facebook page.

'Binders full of women': a revealing remark from Romney, or a sideshow?

'Binders full of women' is already the most memorable phrase of the second presidential debate, showing just how much the 2012 campaign revolves around issues narrowly targeted to specific groups ? a strategy of the Obama campaign.

With all the challenges facing our nation ? from the millions of Americans still unemployed to terrorist threats abroad ? is the presidential election really coming down to a fight over Planned Parenthood and Mitt Romney?s ?binders full of women??

That last phrase, of course, was the unfortunate choice of words Mr. Romney used in Tuesday night?s debate in explaining how, as a governor, he had made an explicit effort to appoint women to his Massachusetts cabinet.?Upon discovering that most applicants for the posts were men, Romney said he asked his staff: ?Well, gosh, can't we ? can't we find some ? some women that are also qualified?" He went on: "And ? and so we ? we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women's groups and said: ?Can you help us find folks?? and they brought us whole binders full of women.??

Let?s put aside the fact that the accuracy of Romney?s remarks has already come into question. (The Massachusetts Women?s Political Caucus reportedly prepared the ?binder? in question well before the election, and had presented it to both Romney and his opponent.) Or that the substance of his response was, in essence, a dodge of the question posed, which had been about equal pay for women.

The larger point is, in a feisty and serious debate that ranged from energy policy to tax policy to the attack in Libya, it?s telling that the most memorable phrase to emerge from the whole evening was ?binders full of women.? It was, as many commentators have pointed out, this debate?s Big Bird.

Apparently, that?s just how the Obama team wants it. With an economic record that?s still far short of where he hoped it would be ? and with critics accusing the president of failing to offer a concrete, overarching vision for the next four years ? Obama has run a campaign that often seems to focus instead on narrower appeals to specific segments of the electorate, just as George W. Bush did in 2004.

Which is why, throughout this election cycle, we?ve heard so much about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and whether insurers should have to cover contraception. And why the Democrats gave former Georgetown Law student (and Rush Limbaugh b?te noire) Sandra Fluke a prime speaking slot at their convention. And why swing states are currently being pummeled with ads by the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria, talking about how Romney wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Nobody "Goes Online" Anymore - Liz Gannes - News - AllThingsD

A large survey of Internet users found that they say they spend fewer hours per week online than they did a year ago.

Wait, really?

Well, it?s a matter of perception. This was a Forrester survey, and people were asked how much time they spend using the Internet. On average, they said 19.6 hours per week, versus 21.9 hours per week when asked the same question in 2011.

But Forrester thinks that the drop is more about perception than reality, because many people are virtually always online these days.

?Despite the fact that they always have connected devices and are always online, they don?t really realize they?re online,? said Forrester analyst Gina Sverdlov. ?They?re using Google Maps or checking in on Facebook, but that?s not considered online because it has become such a part of everyday life.?

When Forrester separately does tracking studies to measure how much time people spend online, it?s way more than they realize, she said. But this particular study was a survey of 58,000 U.S. online adults, who were asked to talk about their own habits.

It makes sense. Why talk or think about ?going online? when you?re already there?

Sverdlov said she sees this difference between how people talk about the Internet and what they actually do in other areas, too.

So, for instance, the Forrester survey found that lots of people say they visit social networking sites regularly: 70 percent this year versus 58 percent in 2010.

Meanwhile, other activities like using photo-sharing sites and contributing to online forums and discussion groups saw drops in reported usage.

People still post photos and talk to each other online all the time, Sverdlov said, but they may think of them differently because they may be doing them on services like Facebook and Twitter. ?We?re seeing somewhat of a cannibalization of other Internet activities because it?s possible to do all that on social networking sites,? she said.

What we actually do is generally more important than the words we use to describe it ? but the fact that these labels are trailing behind is another indicator of the significance of these shifts.

Stocks end mostly higher after housing starts jump

A surprisingly strong housing report helped push stocks modestly higher, even as weak earnings reports from Intel and IBM weighed on the Dow Jones industrial average.

The Dow eked out a gain of five points to close at 13,557.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained six points to 1,461. The Nasdaq composite index edged up three points to 3,104.

IBM reported sales late Tuesday that dropped below Wall Street's expectations, while Intel warned that sales of personal computers will likely remain weak during the holiday season.

On the plus side, builders broke ground on new single-family houses and apartments at the fastest pace since July 2008.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was above average at 3.5 billion shares.

Surface tablet pre-ordering starts now at $499; ships Oct. 26

5 hrs.

Microsoft's Surface RT, the company's surprise entrance into the tablet world, will start at $499 when it ships on Oct. 26. Pre-ordering starts today?at Surface.com. More importantly, I got a chance to play with some of them on Monday, and my impressions are below.

The base-price tablet has 32GB of internal storage (twice what the $499 iPad has, for those keeping track). For $599, you can buy that tablet with a Touch Cover keyboard add-on, and for $699, you get a 64GB version of the product with a Touch Cover. Microsoft isn't talking about its Surface Pro tablet yet ? that is scheduled to arrive, as previously announced, three months after the initial Surface RT product launch.

On Monday, Microsoft's Windows president Steven Sinofsky and Surface team general manager Panos Panay walked reporters through an extensive demo of the product, along with a behind-the-scenes look at how the product was designed and manufactured.

The latest specs
During the presentation, new specs and information came to light. The device will run the Nvidia Tegra 3 T30 processor?with 2GB of RAM. Both the front and back cameras are 720p, meaning it will be good for video (and Skype video calling), but it won't be very useful for still images other than quickie snapshots (not that many people shoot pictures with tablets ... yet). It has two microphones and stereo speakers, and an HD video out port (adapter sold separately).?

Its "Cover port" is specifically used to dock the powered keyboard cover accessories, but Panay confirmed that in the future, this could be used as a means of connecting interactive accessories. (In case you're wondering about speaker docks and things like that, the best answer at this time is that, because the device has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, it supports many audio devices wirelessly, including those that use the DLNA protocol for wireless media streaming.)

Though Microsoft says Surface RT will have a 31.5 watt-hour battery, the company didn't name an exact number of hours it could get. Sinofsky did say it gets "all-day battery life," suggesting 8 or more hours of uptime, and he confirmed that it takes just 2 hours to charge up fully, using the included charger.

How about that touch?keyboard?
Though we only had a brief time to actually use the Surface RT, my first impressions are positive. It's snappy, and the Windows 8 start screen springs to life when you touch it. Flying through a photo gallery is as good as you'd expect, and quite?comparable to an iPad.

What I was really curious about was what it would be like to use the Touch Cover keyboard, and its ease of use came as a pleasant surprise. This isn't some dumb accessory: There's a lot of code written to ensure that the keyboard knows the difference between actual typing and you just setting your fingers down. For instance, if you gently place your finger down on the backspace key, nothing happens. But if you start to press down, it suddenly responds.?

Typing fast will take some practice ??even Panay says the learning curve is four to five days.?When I tried to build up some?speed, I did alright.?The only real issue I had was with the space bar. Though the touchable area of the space bar is pretty large, I couldn't quite manage to hit it, but practice will no doubt improve my space-barring skills.

The other neat feature of the Touch Cover is the integrated track pad. It supports two-finger scrolling, and responds to swipes and taps with problem whatsoever. You quickly start to treat the Surface like a laptop, but given the fact that it comes with a free?full Office 2013?suite ? which is impressive in its own right but isn't particularly touch friendly ? having the laptop-like?mode is a good thing.

Accessories and availability?
If you buy the Surface then want to add accessories later, a Touch Cover by itself costs $119.99, while a Type Cover, the cover with a deeper, mechanical keyboard, costs $129.99. An HD digital AV adapter costs $39.99 and a VGA adapter costs $39.99. Though the product comes with a power supply, you can buy an additional one for $39.99.

Microsoft is adamant that the first wave of Surface tablets is sold through its direct retail channel. You will see it at Microsoft stores around the country ? 27 brick and mortar stores to date in U.S., with four more opening in November, along with 34 more "holiday" kiosk stores popping up in malls all over. You will not see it at any Best Buy or Walmart stores.?

Online shoppers in the U.S. as well as the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, China and Hong Kong will be able to go to Surface.com to buy it as well.

"Is it a tablet or is it a laptop?" Sinofsky asked reporters, rhetorically, in anticipation of the big question most people have. "I've been using this now for a long time, six months, and it's been really fascinating for me," he continued. "I've used a lot of tablets. This is not a tablet, but it is the best tablet I've ever used. And I've used a lot of laptops. This is not a laptop, but it's the very best laptop I've ever used."

We shall see, but from what we did get a chance to experience, this baby is well worth a look come Oct. 26 ? assuming you live close enough to a Microsoft store to get a gander.
