Teatro de la Luna is delighted to present its 15th International Festival of Hispanic Theater, which runs October 9 through November 17. This year theater companies from Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Spain, the United States and Venezuela will be featured at Gunston Arts Center - Theater Two in Arlington, VA. All performances are Spanish with live English dubbing, except the children's production.
Oct. 11, 12, 8pm - Oct. 13, 3 pm & 8 pm
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Otelo... Sniff (Othello... Sniff) adapted by Claudio Rivera
About the play: Othelo... Sniff?s scenic blend of Afro-West Indian dance forms and artful Clown movements captivates the audience with its comical montage of subversive images. This reflection of Dominican identity cleverly depicts the universal nature of Shakespeare?s play.
Oct. 18, 19, 8 pm - Oct. 20, 3 pm & 8 pm
ARGENTINA: Jesucristo (Jesus Christ) by Mariano Moro
About the play: As in a painting, such as the many that have been inspired by the same theme throughout the centuries, we rediscover a Jesus who is transparent, believable, insightful. Words of love are embroidered in moving stories ... and Mazzei delivers them with a dash of humor.
Oct. 25, 26, 8 pm - Oct. 27, 3 pm & 8 pm
SPAIN: Cartas de las Golondrinas (Letters from the Swallows) by Blanca del Barrio
About the play: Fragments; personal stories that speak of hope, of opportunity, of nostalgia, of identity. At the beginning of the 20th Century, with the hope for a better future, they uprooted themselves from their lands; they were the enterprising and reckless Spaniards in the Americas ... And today, history repeats itself ... in this infinite, circular journey.
Nov. 1, 2, 8 pm - Nov. 3, 3 pm & 8 pm
ECUADOR: Ag?ita de Viejas (Fragrances from the Past) by Mar?a Beatriz Vergara
About the play: Two well-conceived characters - both physically and spiritually - create this portrait of ?a class of old women? who practice a way of being and a way of life ... From what they say and what they keep to themselves, we become avid confidants of their thoughts and naughtiness.
Nov. 8, 9, 8 pm - Nov. 10, 3 pm & 8 pm
VENEZUELA: Palabras Encadenadas (Killing Words) by Jordi Galcer?n
About the play: A couple?s relationship from a point of view that exposes them as two human beings locked in a game without limits; life as a game, and a game to survive. Worn-out love, the separation and pain that this implies. A psychological and mental exercise embellished in an erotic and depraved fashion.
Nov. 15, 16, 8 pm - Nov. 17, 3 pm & 8 pm
ARGENTINA: Madre Primeriza (First Time Mother) by Mariel RoscianoAbout the play:Women with a profession, a husband, a house to take care of. Top this off with the arrival of a child. Day to day frenzy! Luckily, first time moms only happen once in a lifetime, and the intensive course to learn how to parent is unique, singular, and flies by.
Theater for Children in Spanish only:
Nov. 3, 11:30 am
UNITED STATES: Yo La Llamo Rusita Rojas (I Call Her Rusita Rojas) by Cristina Ferrari
About the play: Dynamic, instructive and entertaining adaptation of the classic children?s tale, ?Red Riding Hood? by Charles Perrault. Three very funny characters return to the pages of a storybook ... a place in which to relish that time of childhood and fantasy.
