SAO PAULO - Police in northeastern Brazil say they have arrested former Brazil representative Marcelinho for allegedly attempting to rape a woman.

Oziel Cunha Costa, a spokesman for the police department in Campina Grande, in the state of Paraiba, says the 36-year-old midfielder was arrested early Wednesday during a party at his house.

He says that according to the alleged victim, Marcelinho forced her to kiss him and pulled her hair.

Costa declined to provide further details.

Marcelinho's lawyer, Afonso Vilar, told G1 news web portal that his client denied harassing or trying to rape anyone at the party.

Marcelinho, who played for Brazil in 2001, has played for clubs in Germany, France and Turkey, and currently for Sport in Recife.
