NORTON, Mass. (AP) ? Tiger Woods had his lowest opening round in three years Friday in the Deutsche Bank Championship. It still wasn't enough to be low man in Sean Foley's coaching stable.

Seung-yul Noh, a rising star from South Korea in his first season on the PGA Tour, ran off four straight birdies early in his round and closed with back-to-back birdies on the TPC Boston for a 9-under 62.

That gave him a one-shot lead over Chris Kirk, whose 23 putts included an eagle on the new 18th hole.

Woods wasn't too shabby. He stirred up a big gallery on a glorious summer day in New England with six straight birdies, which featured four putts of at least 12 feet and flop shot executed so perfectly that it cleared a steep bunker and landed in an area of the green no larger than a hula hoop. His lone bogey on the final hole gave him a 7-under 64, putting him in a three-way tie for third with Jeff Overton and Ryan Moore.

The average score was just under 70 on a perfect day for scoring, except for the deceptive wind that swirled through the trees.

Rory McIlroy struggled off the tee, though he judged one of the lies in the rough beautifully on the ninth hole, a 7-iron into tap-in range that led to a 65.

Noh stole the show, even if hardly anyone was paying attention or was not really sure who he was.

"Some people say Kevin Na, like, 'Go Kevin,'" Noh said.

The 21-year-old from South Korea won his first Asian Tour title at age 17, and he chose to come over to America this year to ease his travel. He made it through Q-school in December, and on Friday turned in his strongest PGA Tour round to date.

"Everything good today," Noh said.

He went to work with Foley in May, mentioning the roster of clients as one of his reasons ? Woods, Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose.

"He's a good kid," Mahan said after a much-needed 68. "If Foley says, 'Do this 1,000 times,' he'll go home and do it 1,000 times."

The start was more meaningful for Overton, whose game has practically disappeared since he played on the Ryder Cup team two years ago. He is No. 83 in the FedEx Cup standings, and only the top 70 advance next week to the third playoff event at Crooked Stick in Indiana ? his home state.

"I'm constantly getting a lot of great text messages and people say, 'Hey, we're really excited to see you at Crooked Stick,' just the whole Hoosier nation," Overton said. "It's just going to be fun if I can get into the event."

He had his own birdie streak, only on the opposite end of the course from Woods. Overton made five straight birdies through the 16th hole, and then added one more birdie on the 18th hole for a 64 that put him atop the leaderboard with Woods from the morning session.

Woods played with Barclays winner Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker, two players who are trying to make enough of an impression on Davis Love III to be selected as Ryder Cup captain's picks on Tuesday. Snedeker scrambled his way to a respectable 69. Watney, who has never finished higher than 33rd on the TPC Boston, never looked comfortable in his round of 72.

Dustin Johnson, another candidate to get one of the four Ryder Cup selections, opened with a 67.

Rickie Fowler overcame a rugged start to salvage a 71. Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker, likely to get two of the picks, each had a 69.

Getting off to a good start is nothing new for Woods. This was the 14th time in 18 tournaments this year that he was at par or better. Lately, it's been about the finishes. Even though Woods has won three times this year ? the most of anyone on the PGA Tour ? he has turned in some peculiar weekends. Twice he was tied for the lead at majors going into the final two rounds and stumbled. Last week at Bethpage Black, he had a 72-76 weekend to drop into the middle of the pack.

Woods doesn't seem bothered by all this. He attributed last week to extreme conditions on the greens at Bethpage in the third round, and a final round that simply got away from him on a three-hole stretch on the back nine.

"It wasn't like I was hitting a lot of awful shots," he said. "I just needed a couple putts to go my way, and it didn't happen. I should be right around par, and it turns into an over-par round. Today was about the same as I have been playing pretty much all summer, just go out there and playing pretty consistent. It was just a nice, solid round."

There was a stretch when it all looked so easy.

Woods hit a full swing, flop shot behind the 12th green to a few feet away to save par, the only time he was seriously in trouble. He hit a high cut with a 5-iron to a tough pin on the par-3 11th for birdie from 15 feet, and he holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the 13th.

The streak began with a 6-iron to the middle of the 18th green for a two-putt birdie. He rolled in birdie putts from the 12-foot to 18-foot range on the next three holes, and while he nearly holed out with a wedge on No. 5, his best work came at the 293-yard fourth hole.

Woods can reach the green with a 3-wood, but he felt the wind gust into his face, and opted for a driver, playing for a baby cut to take off some distance and get it into the front bunker for a relatively easy up-and-down. Instead, it came a yard short of the sand, and he had to play a high flop to a tiny section of the green that ran away from him.

"I had to play an all-out shot to try to keep it on the green," he said. "I went for it, and it came off."

His bid for a seventh straight birdie ? the last time he had a streak that long was the third round at the 2005 Masters that carried into Sunday morning ? was a 12-footer up the hill on the sixth hole. He took a step toward the hole as the ball was a foot away, sure it was going to drop, and stopped in his tracks as the ball turned slightly to the left. He spun around and removed his cap in disbelief.

As many as he was making, perhaps it was a shock to see one miss.

"Unfortunately, it just wiggled about a half-ball left, where I thought it was going to wiggle about a half-ball right," he said.

The round ended on a sour note, with a 7-iron as the wind briefly died. The ball went into the collar of the green, sitting down just enough that he tried to swing hard enough to generate speed and spin the ball. It didn't work out, and the chip ran 12 feet by. He missed for his only bogey, and tossed his putter at the bag in disgust. Anyone who had not seen the previous 17 holes might have thought it was another tough day at the office.

Instead, it was his lowest score since a 64 in the opening round of the 2009 AT&T National at Congressional.

Advertisers Gain Interest-Based Targeting on Twitter

Twitter enhanced its paid products for advertisers today with a new targeting option that includes more than 350 interests. Brands can now target their Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts to specific subsets of users based on their interests.

While the auction mechanisms and bidding process remains, the new interest-based targeting parameters are now built into Twitter's dashboard for advertisers. Brands can also create custom interest segments by suggesting a specific user or company account that attracts the same audiences they are trying to reach.

Upon release of the new targeting feature, Twitter also reduced the minimum bid from 50 cents to one cent. The move brings Twitter's minimum advertising prices more in line with other ad platforms and "removes a potential source of friction," said Guy Yalif, head of product marketing at Twitter. "Brands now have the option to target that tweet just to specific audiences."

Through its own algorithms, Twitter extrapolates users' interests from their public tweets. That data is already being used to aggregate custom data for each user in the discover tab and to promote Twitter users that they might want to follow based on similar interests. But this is the first time Twitter has enabled advertisers to target specific users based on those interests.

At least 20 advertisers, including Bonobos and Walgreens, have been testing interest targeting on Twitter over the past few weeks, said Yalif. Bonobos recently held a 24-hour sale on Twitter with a series of Promoted Tweets that were sent to its followers and similar users, resulting in a 1 to 3 percent average engagement rate.

While those results mirror the average level of engagement Twitter is already achieving through Promoted Tweets, Yalif said he expects that number to fluctuate primarily based on the quality of content. "The audience ends up being very interested and larger," he said. "Here we're seeing significantly enhanced reach while the average engagement rate stays the same."

Kevin Weil, director of product management at Twitter, explained the evolving advertising platform model in a blog post: "Our Promoted Products are auction-based, where winners are determined by engagement rate and bids. Great content matters: if you have engaging Promoted Tweet copy, you can win even if others bid higher. We believe the new lower minimum bid, in combination with interest targeting, will drive greater ROI for every campaign on Twitter."

As more advertisers take advantage of interest targeting, it is the combined use of these new features that will be most powerful for marketers, Yalif said. "Vertical after vertical these interests allow you to align with that vertical and it also allows you to reach users at different stages of their life."

Metal Gear Solid looks set to follow in the footsteps of Tomb Raider, and, er, Super Mario Bros. and Hitman, in becoming yet another video game to be ported over to the silver screen.

Spider-Man producer Avi Arad appeared at the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Japan and announced that Sony Pictures will be pushing a film version into development, ending long-standing speculation that the game was ripe for adaptation.

"For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters," said Arad during a brief speech on-stage, "and videogames are the comics of today." Given that comic-book movies are still arriving at a rate of knots, we're not sure that the analogy holds water, but you get what he's trying to say.

The Metal Gear Solid series follows the exploits of one Solid Snake, a kind of super-soldier / spy / mercenary figure, charged with taking down a mysterious nuclear-weapon-sporting mecha known as Metal Gear. Needless to say, he's a total badass.

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie did in fact have filters: He used a teleprompter, and he read from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

Christie did not stray much, except to add emphasis or focus his audience. And while he did seem a tad less spontaneous than usual, his delivery ? "I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it" ? was every bit as powerful.

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Whatever butterflies she might have had going in, they had flown soon after she took the stage. She even went off script at regular intervals, channeling Oprah Winfrey after a passage about mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: "I love you women, and I hear your voices," she shouted.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

Georgia school officials defend football coach after prayer complaint

Officials at a northwest Georgia high school are defending its football team's practice of having student-led prayers and church-held meals before games.

Walker County Superintendent Damon Raines said at a Wednesday news conference that Ridgeland High School isn't violating the First Amendment rights of the players and that its football team will continue having the prayers and meals.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation accused football coach Mark Mariakis of taking athletes to church where a Christian message was preached, of leading postgame prayers and pressuring team members to attend a Christian football camp, along with other accusations.

Raines said he believes the coach is only using motivational speeches to encourage the athletes to display upstanding character on and off the field.

365 Business Network is an eclectic group of individuals, business people, entrepreneurs, and the like. We will be meeting for the sixth time this Tuesday August 28, at Bobby O?Brien?s. Bring a friend.

When we sat down initially to discuss forming a group where people living and working in Kitchener Waterloo could discuss and find answers to questions in an online community and then have the opportunity to meet once a month as a group, we thought seriously about calling our group 365 Social Network. We are after all, networking socially online daily and in person monthly.

But we wanted to maintain a certain level of seriousness of purpose, the purpose being to build relationships with other group members, establish trust and confidence in a whole new group of friends so that when the opportunity arises to do business together (or to refer business) we know who to turn to for advice and service.

365 Business Network is an offshoot of?365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo. 365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo is a community website that I and my partners started about a year and a half ago. The purpose of the site is to highlight one event, attraction, restaurant, place of interest, or thing to do every day in Waterloo Region.

Truth be told, as a real estate agent, my goal of starting the site, besides community involvement, was as an online marketing vehicle for my real estate business. Not only does every daily post have an advertisement for me and my real estate business, it also gets me and my real estate business partner ? Alasdair Douglas and my 365 things to do partners ? Mike Stark and Amanda Maxwell out in the community, interacting with retailers, restauranteurs, gallery owners and the myriad of other private and public individuals we end up meeting. 365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo is certainly a popular social interactive site. We get over 10,000 unique visits a month and about 60,000 page views. As we used to say when I was teaching English in Taiwan, ?That?s not too shabby?. Our goal is for 365 Business Network to be a socially interactive community for Kitchener Waterloo businesses, business people and residents.

365 Business Network meets on the last Tuesday of every month. Bobby O?Brien?s is providing free appetizers. There is free parking after 6pm in the public lot across the street. This group and event are free to join.

New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine reassessing clinical data from trials, which investigate ways of treating side effects of therapy for prostate cancer, finds that tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen used to treat breast cancer, is also able to suppress gynecomastia and breast pain in men.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and early treatment is usually very successful. Androgen-suppression therapy is often used to slow down progression of advanced disease. However, unwanted side effects of anti-androgen treatment, such as breast enlargement, can stop men from seeking treatment for their cancer.

Testosterone can drive the growth of prostate cancer and anti-androgens are used to inhibit prostate cancer growth by preventing testosterone from binding to androgen receptors. But receptors in cells within the testes are also blocked and start to make more testosterone to compensate. Some of this extra testosterone is converted into estrogen which is responsible for development of breast tissue and other breast events. Anti-estrogens work by jamming the estrogen receptor, while aromatase inhibitors prevent the conversion of testosterone into estrogen.

A collaboration between the German Cochrane Center and University Clinic Erlangen combined data from four independent clinical trials each looking at the management of breast events (during treatment for prostate cancer) with tamoxifen.

A meta-analysis of all four trials showed that tamoxifen reduced the risk of both gynecomastia and breast pain at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of treatment compared to men who received no treatment. Overall, treatment with tamoxifen was more successful in reducing breast symptoms than treatment with an aromatase inhibitor (anastrazole) or radiotherapy.

Although there is no long term data available, few of the men treated with tamoxifen, either as preventative or therapeutic treatment, stopped taking their medication during their year of treatment. There were also no significant adverse effects.

Dr Frank Kunath, who led this study explained, "Not all men will suffer gynecomastia during anti-androgen therapy. However, if men know that there is a successful option for reducing the breast symptoms associated with treatment for prostate cancer they may be more likely to see their doctor when symptoms of cancer first appear, and consequently reduce the number of unnecessary deaths."

This past Wednesday on our way home from Michigan, Joshua said, ?Mama, I can?t wait to get home so you can bake us some bread. Your bread tastes so much better than the bread we have been eating.? ?Really?? I was a little surprised by his statement. Keith had asked if we could just buy store bread while away. He knew it would be difficult for me to do major baking where we were staying and so I reluctantly agreed. We did decide that I could still bake pancakes, pitas, and tortillas made from freshly milled flour!

The bread we purchased was made out of Fort Wayne, Indiana (about 2 hours from where we were staying) and was actually not that bad. It held together well, was soft, and it made very pretty sandwiches.

But, there was an obvious element missing that Joshua had picked up on. The taste from fresh bread made from freshly ground ingredients with zero preservatives had become what he was accustomed to and desired. That was a big win for this mama!

So, today we are making some bread and possibly a doughnut or two or three! They have been asking for doughnuts for a while now and I am thinking they sound pretty good too. These are so good that I recommend that you only make enough for a couple of doughnuts a piece or you may begin a love/hate relationship with them that will keep you from ever making them again! Even too much of a good thing can turn bad!

Whole Wheat Doughnuts

1 1/2 cups of hot water
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup raw honey
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoon Real salt
3-4 cups freshly ground whole wheat flour
1/2 cup freshly ground flax seed
1 tablespoon yeast
2 teaspoons of rice bran (optional)

Mix first 5 ingredients well. Add a couple of cups of flour and then all the flax seed along with yeast and rice bran. Begin to mix and knead. Continue to add flour until the dough is workable. Knead for 5-10 minutes. ?Put into lightly greased bowl. Cover. Let rise until double in size. Punch down and lay onto floured surface. ?Roll into large rectangle about a half of an inch thick. Begin to cut out doughnuts and let rise again (make sure dough is not sticking to surface or you will have a time getting them off).

Bring a quart or so of peanut oil to 365 degrees. Once the oil reaches 365, begin to carefully place doughnuts into oil and flip after about 30 seconds. Cook on opposite side about 30 seconds and then take them out of oil and place them onto a dish or cooling rack covered with paper towels. Once they can be touched, begin to dip them into desired glaze or sprinkle them with powdered sucanat with honey.

1 teaspoon butter or extra virgin coconut oil melted

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup or so of powdered sucanat

Tablespoon or so of sifted raw cacao

1 teaspoon at a time of cream or milk

Whisk all ingredients together and slowly add the milk, adding more to create the consistency you like best. We kept ours pretty thick.

Sucanat with Honey Glaze

1 teaspoon of butter or extra virgin coconut oil melted

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup or so of powdered sucanat with honey

1 teaspoon at a time of cream or milk

Whisk all of the ingredients together and slowly add milk. You will want this to remain pretty thick, but add more milk to make the consistency that you like the best.

?The Father of Sword & Soul and an Elated Author talk Sword & Soul, Steamfunk and Racism in Role-Playing: Charles Saunders Interviews Balogun!

Recently, I had the honor of being interviewed by one of my idols ? Charles R. Saunders ? the father of Sword and Soul and creator of the Imaro and Dossouye series of novels, as well as the incredible Pulp novel, Damballa.

Balogun Ojetade is the Master Instructor and Technical Director of the Afrikan Martial Arts Institute, a school that teaches indigenous, West African martial arts. Born and raised in Chicago, he was educated at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Columbia College in Chicago.

At Columbia, he majored in Film, with a concentration in screenwriting. Balogun wears many hats, besides his career as a martial-arts instructor: freelance journalist, screenwriter, film director, film producer, fight choreographer and actor. And he is excellent at all these endeavors.

During the short time I?ve known him, Balogun has made a great impression on me. He could be considered a Renaissance man, but given his love for all things African, ?Blackaissance Man? is a better tag. As you read the interview below, you?ll see what I mean.

Q: When and how did you become interested in fantasy and science fiction?

I became interested in fantasy and science fiction as a little boy of no more than five years old at the feet of my mother. My mother was ? and still is ? a huge fan of the television shows Get Smart and The Wild, Wild West. Get Smart was an American?comedy?television series?that?satirized?the secret agent genre. It was a great science fiction show that I enjoyed. The Wild, Wild West ? which incorporated classic?Western?elements with elements of the espionage?thriller,?science fiction/alternate history,? a bit of? horror?and plenty of humor ? is one of my favorite shows and greatly influenced my writing. The Wild, Wild West would be classified as Steampunk today ? one of the genres I enjoy writing.

Q: Speaking of another genre, you?ve got a Sword and Soul novel coming out very soon called Once Upon A Time In Afrika. Where did the idea for the novel come from, and what?s it about? (Full disclosure: I was privileged to write the Introduction to this novel.)

Once Upon A Time In Afrika is about Akinkugbe ? a young man from the Oyo Empire ? who enters a martial arts tournament to fight for the hand of the woman he loves. The best warriors from across the continent of Onile (?Afrika?) have gathered to do battle, unaware that a threat to the entire continent is heading their way.

The idea came from my study of ? and initiation into ? the traditional priesthoods and warrior societies of the Yoruba. The customs intrigue me. How certain chiefs and warriors wear certain clothing and carry certain weapons and other trappings of status and those things carry deep meaning. Traditional people do not just throw on any old garment or wear a random headpiece. Their gear tells a story. That is what sparked the idea for ?Once Upon A Time In Afrika? and the story just grew from there.

Q: Is the title a play on Once Upon A Time In The West?

The title is not only a play on ?Once Upon A Time in the West?, but also on ?Once Upon A Time in Mexico? and ?Once Upon A Time in China?. I am a fan of all three films and figured it was time to tell the ?Once Upon A Time in Afrika? story, which I hope to one day produce and direct as a feature film. In fact, the script is already written.

Q: When you first started reading fantasy and science fiction, were you already aware there were at least a few black writers in the field? Did you feel alone as a black person in reading this type of fiction, or were some of your black friends also into it?

I knew there had to be Black writers out there. It?s funny; I read an article you wrote in 1987 in Dragon Magazine #122. The article ? which I still have ? is entitled ?Out of Africa? and is about creatures from African Folklore. When I read it, I said, ?Man, this white dude has done his research, but one day, I am going to write about Africa and it wondrous creatures, history and artifacts so my people can get it from a brother.? It?s funny now?and kind of sad that I had no clue you were a Black man until about four years ago. And I did not know Samuel Delaney was Black until about two years ago.

I never felt alone in reading science fiction and fantasy as my friends were also into fantasy, science fiction and horror. Ninety-percent of my friends collected comic books and played role-playing games and ninety-nine percent of them were Black, so I felt right at home.

Q: Whoa, I almost had an identity crisis for a minute there. Moving on ? from your viewpoint, what is the current state of Sword and Soul?

I see Sword and Soul growing tremendously in popularity this year and especially in 2013, with the release of Griots II: Sisters of the Spear. A lot of people ? authors and readers alike ? are very excited about its release.

Also, when I posted the cover art for ?Once Upon A Time in Afrika? people loved it. The positive reaction and eagerness for the release of the book is incredible.

Finally, as a former teacher of English and Creative Writing, I turned my students on to your work and the work of Milton Davis and the students ? many who were reluctant readers ? fell in love with Sword and Soul, a testament to the power of the genre and to your ? and Milton?s ? Blacknificent talent.

Q: Thanks for the kind words, Balogun. Moving on ?a new subgenre has sprung up over the past few years. It?s called ?steamfunk,? and it?s a black variation of ?steampunk,? which is itself a recent development. Is steamfunk to steampunk what Sword and Soul is to sword and sorcery?

Yes, Steamfunk is a philosophy or style of writing that combines the African and / or African American culture and approach to life with that of the steampunk philosophy and / or?steampunk fiction.

Like Sword and Soul, Steamfunk has a rhythm; an aesthetic; a spirituality that differs enough from the genre from which it sprang to be its own genre, or at a minimum, a subgenre. Sword and Soul is not Sword and Sorcery in Black-face. It has a different feel to it, as does Steamfunk in relation to Steampunk.

Q: You?ve made your own contribution to steamfunk: ?Moses: The Chronicles of Harriet Tubman,? based on the black woman who helped more than 300 slaves escape from the South in the years before the Civil War. How did this idea come to you, and how does your version of Tubman?s exploits differ from what happened in real-life history?

Harriet Tubman is one of my idols and represents the epitome of a freedom fighter. I originally researched Harriet Tubman?s history for a poem I wrote about her and found out some incredible things about her, such as the fact that not one of the people after her head ever gave the same description of her as someone else. She seemed to be able to change her size and appearance.

She was also incredibly strong. Once, as an elderly woman, she refused to leave her seat on a train. It took five men ? after breaking her arm ? to remove her. And it is well known that she had psychic abilities.

These stories sparked my imagination and I decided to write a story about Harriet Tubman as a person who possessed abilities beyond normal human beings and that there were others like her ? some good; some not so good. I then began to research the time period and the characters and story came to me.

In ?Moses: The Chronicles of Harriet Tubman?, Harriet battles and bonds with famous ? and infamous figures in history. I have combined real events and twisted them with the paranormal and anachronistic technology. Harriet Tubman is still a freedom fighter, but she is also an expert in hand-to-hand combat and possesses powers that make her one of the greatest ? and deadliest ? opponents of those who would oppress, subjugate and destroy those weaker than themselves.

Q: Do you have any other steamfunk projects on the go? I know you?ll have a story in the upcoming steamfunk anthology that you and Milton Davis are co-editing.

I have written several Steamfunk stories, including ?Nandi?, a story about a woman who is a detective in an America in which Africans purchased California and set up a free state for Blacks, First Nation / Native Americans and the oppressed Chinese. Steam technology is not discovered until the mid 1900s. The story takes place in the 70s and combines elements of Blaxploitation films with Steampunk.

Other stories include ?Black Caesar: The Stone Ship Rises?, which takes place on the high seas; ?The Hand of Sa-Seti?, a Sword and Soul / Steamfunk mash-up and ?Rite of Passage: Blood & Iron?, a tale of the legendary John Henry.

As co-editor of the ?Steamfunk? anthology, I am contributing a story in which Harriet Tubman does battle with Peter Pan.

Finally, Milton and I co-produced ?Rite of Passage: Initiation? a short film I wrote based on his short story, ?Rite of Passage?. We plan to use the short film to generate interest and funding to make the larger project, which is a television or webseries, also based on the ?Rite of Passage? story. ?Rite of Passage: Initiation?, which is about Harriet Tubman initiating her pupil as a Conductor on the Underground Railroad, is complete and will premiere August 4, 2012 at the Black Science Fiction Film Festival.

Q: You, Milton, and several others are in the process of developing an African-inspired fantasy role-playing game called Ki-Khanga. When did the inspiration for this venture hit you, and how is the game coming?

I have wanted to create an African-inspired role-playing game since I was twelve years old. I finally came up with a system for the game about six years ago, which I presented to Milton Davis last year and we have been developing it together ever since.

Ki-Khanga is coming along well. Milton and I have developed the countries on the continent of Ki-Khanga, an alternate Africa, and we are writing stories set in each country to make players more familiar with the world and to spark ideas for game-play.

We have play-tested the game and have gotten positive feedback, which we are using to further develop the game into a fun and unique experience that fans of role-playing games, fantasy and Sword and Soul, as well as African history will love. After one more local play-test, we will play-test the game a few times in other cities before we prepare for the game?s release.

Q: How did you and your group develop the Ki-Khanga setting? How much of it is derived from real-life sources, and how much came from your imaginations?

Milton and I have met several times over the course of a year to discuss ? and work on ? building the Ki-Khanga world. We took the continent of Africa as our foundation and then made things quite a bit more fantastic. Ki-Khanga is a bit smaller than real-life Africa and only has sixteen countries.

After naming the countries and creating their governments, economic systems, religious systems and the like, we created a history for the continent itself and how the fantastic creatures, fearsome monsters and powerful magic all came to be as a result of the wrath of the Creator. How He struck the continent with His axe and how the destruction in his wake was given life by His wrath and by the nurturing of his equally powerful wife.

Q: Who, besides Milton, are the others involved in the development of Ki-Khanga?

A: The other people working on Ki-Khanga are Stanley J. Weaver (?Standingo?), an extraordinary artist whose works have graced the covers and interiors of several novels and comic books; and Eugene Randolph Young (?Eurayo?), another Blacktastic artist who is an art instructor and artist for role-playing games and comic books. Stan is creating the visuals for the cultures in Ki-Khanga and Eugene is creating the creatures and further developing the maps, which are drawn by Milton. Milton is co-producer, co-creator and publisher of the game.

Q: For the record, Stan did the cover art for Once Upon A Time in Afrika. Meanwhile, I know the Ki-Khanga concept will ultimately involve more than just the game. What sort of spin-offs are in the works?

We will release an anthology before the game is released to build interest in the Ki-Khanga world. This anthology will be interwoven into the game itself also.

As a screenwriter and director, I am always looking at things and seeing how they can be developed into a film, so I have been working on a screenplay for Ki-Khanga as well. I believe that the release of a Sword and Soul role-playing game, followed by a Sword and Soul movie will send the popularity of Sword and Soul into the stratosphere.

Q: About 10 years ago, there was an African-based game out called Nyambe. Would you regard Nyambe as a predecessor to Ki-Khanga?

?Nyambe? wasn?t actually a role-playing game. It was a supplement for Dungeons and Dragons. Ki-Khanga is a stand-alone role-playing game with its own unique system of play and a unique random generation system that utilizes playing cards instead of dice.

Q: Martial arts are associated with almost every place on the planet, except Africa. There?s karate and kung-fu from Asia; modern boxing, which originated in England; mixed martial arts, which comes from North America; Greco-Roman wrestling (origin obvious) and so on. But Africa has indigenous martial-arts traditions of its own, which you have studied and Incorporated into your work. What are some of those traditions, and what can be done to make the rest of the world more aware of them?

If you go to Africa and ask for the local African martial arts school, they will send you to a Tae Kwon Do or Judo school because in Africa, the martial arts are referred to as ?wrestling?. To wrestle ? by African standards ? means to put someone on their back, belly or side, thus rendering them more susceptible to a finishing technique. This is achieved by any means, thus, if I shoot my opponent in the neck with my long-bow and he falls, I have wrestled him by African standards.

Some of the names of these systems, which all operate on the same principles, with slight variations in strategy and / or application, include:

Laamb (Senegal) ? also called Lutte Senegalaise avec frappe (Senegalese fighting with strikes); Ijakadi (Nigeria / Yorubaland); Nsanga (Angola) ? also called Sanguar; and Mgba (Nigeria / Igboland).

Q: Are African martial arts in danger of becoming extinct in Africa itself? If so, what can be done to prevent that from happening?

A: No, African martial arts are not in danger of becoming extinct in Africa. They are an intrinsic part of the traditions of the people. In Senegal, Laamb is the number one sport, followed by soccer. The real danger is that Africans in the Diaspora (i.e. African-Americans, Black Brits, Afro-Brazilians, Afro-Cubans and the like) are forgetting, or have already forgotten the martial arts of their ancestors and feel Asian martial arts are the ultimate expression of martial arts. This can be prevented by making more African martial arts movies.

People believe in what they see on television and in film. When Steven Seagal ? a master of the Japanese art of Aikido ? came out with his Above the Law movie, Aikido schools around the world increased in membership by 400%1 Similar growth happened in Kung-Fu schools in the ?70s; Ninjitsu schools in the ?80s; and now in Mixed Martial Arts schools ? all because of television shows and movies like Kung-Fu, Enter Wm Dragon, Enter the Nina, The Octagon, and The Ultimate Fighter.

A couple of African martial arts films would inspire many of our people to train. Of course, making films is expensive, which is why, until my production company produced A Single Link, there weren?t any such films made. A Sword and Soul film would be the best setting in which to showcase the African martial arts.

Q: As we can see from the above, you?re into a lot of projects, all of which are valuable and worthwhile. How do you manage to spread yourself out without spreading yourself thin?

A: Being the father of eight children, ranging in age from 25 ? 4, has made me very efficient with time. I have a strong work ethic and I love the creative process, so I enjoy what I do. I also have a very patient and understanding wife, who is an artist herself ? a photographer ? so she allows me the time and space to do what I do. Of course, she knows that when I blow up, she will be sitting pretty, so her allowance is a wise move.

Q: How do you envision future participation of blacks in science fiction and fantasy? I?m old enough to remember when the only visible presence in the field was Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek series. We?ve come a long way since then. Do we still have a long way to go?

A: Participation of Blacks in science fiction and fantasy is growing rapidly. There are over 2000 members on the Black Science Fiction Society website and our Facebook group, State of Black Science Fiction 2012, has nearly 400 members and has only existed since February, 2012.

We have many authors, animators, film directors and artists.? Of course, we have a long way to go; however, most of us have stopped waiting for Hollywood to discover us, which is a step in the right direction.

For those that still think we cannot make it without Hollywood (I include major publishing companies in this), Street Lit and Nollywood prove otherwise. Admittedly, a lot of the work coming from these outlets is not the best, however, if we take the same hustle and grind mentality that they have and combine that with our superior work, we will be just as successful or more so.
